THYME

OXTON by Si Hall & Max Hall

Welcome to Thyme , a cosy neighbourhood Bistro in the heart of Oxton , from the creators of the exquisite Panoramic 34 . Cooking modern , eclectic food with flair , the Daytime Menu offers breakfast & brunch and their new Evening Menu offers inventive cuisine , using locally sourced produce , along with an expansive wine , cocktails , drinks & local beers list .
This month we took along a young foodie , Max ( age 15 ) on work placement to sample and shoot the new menu ( surely the best placement gig ever ?)
And so we begin ...
Starters Jerusalem Artichoke Terrine - Served with saffron Aioli and shaved Pecorino , this dish was carefully and elegantly constructed . The layered considered flavours really cut through , a really substantial portion for a starter . Very nicely done .
Mackerel Pate - This dish comes accompanied by cucumber , pickled shallot , and their very own homemade crackers . Another pretty dish , which is very clean and refreshing on the palate , feels like a healthy option .
Crispy Pork Belly - with fennel , apple remoulade & pickled mustard . It ' s a classic simple dish but so easy to get wrong . This however was done to perfection .
Fish & Chips - Cooked in a homemade beer batter , served with butter minted mushy peas , tartare sauce and Thyme ' s very own homemade thick cut chips . Young Max rated this ' The very best fish and chips he ' d tasted on the Wirral ' ( high praise indeed ).
Pan Fried Sea Trout - with crushed new potatoes , fennel sauce and a sprinkling of sea herbs . Beautifully tender and moist .
Truffle Gnocchi - Wild mushrooms , the perfect amount of white wine sauce and crispy pecorino . A really nice idea , the pillow / crunch textures really worked .
We ' ve always really enjoyed Thyme ' s evolving dishes , but this new menu from head chef Mehdi and Manager Lee is ... we have to say the best we ' ve ever tasted . Their slick , strong team have found something that is almost a hybrid of Thyme and Panoramic 34 - a carefully , beautifully presented selection of thoughtful dishes but with really substantial portions , so therefore incredible value , while still retaining that level of finesse . Very impressive .
Excellent work Thyme team . Full marks . Booking advised on 0151 601 8669 W : thymeoxton . com
Mains Chicken Fricasse - Wild mushroom , white wine sauce , roast new potatoes & charred chicory . This is a real taste sensation , every element really delivered .
Ox Cheek Bourguignon - Served with Dijon Pomme Puree , Bourguignon sauce and fine beans . This fine cut melts immediately , paired with their signature whipped creamy mash . This is a serious ' Sunday Roast ' heavy weight contender .
