AFFORDABLE CAFÉ AND SUPERMARKET TO OPEN IN BIRKENHEAD
THE WIRRAL DRAGON BOAT RACE 2018
A community café and‘ citizens’ supermarket’ is coming to Birkenhead as Pyramids Shopping Centre partners with the charity, Feeding Birkenhead, which was set up by the town’ s MP Frank Field as part of the Feeding Britain network that aims to eliminate hunger in the UK.
Work has started on the build at 7 Princes Pavement in Pyramids Shopping Centre, which will be a membership-based, non-profit food shop and café. It will focus on the provision of good quality surplus food for people in Birkenhead who are struggling to pay the bills.
Local charities and community groups will also be on hand at‘ Number 7’- as the café and supermarket will be called- to provide a range of supportive services including welfare rights, debt advice, help looking for work, as well as budgeting support and cooking sessions. Membership for the citizens’ supermarket will be by referral from one of Feeding Birkenhead’ s partners, such as housing and healthcare organisations.
Food suppliers, including Kellogg’ s and Brakes will donate food supplies to help stock Number 7 when it opens in September. Membership for shoppers will be for six months initially, with the option to extend if further support is needed. Access to the café and community support services will be available to all.
Feeding Birkenhead will be recruiting paid staff members, as well as a number of volunteers for the running of the shop, café and offering community support.

The Wirral Dragon Boat race has been building momentum each year culminating in a record 21 teams from around the Wirral & beyond entering this years competition that took place on 7th July.
This annual event is the main fundraising event for Headway Wirral, a local charity who help victims of brain injuries and their families.
Teams from local businesses such as Laird Assessors( helped by Revolution Four), the Carpenters Group, The Viking and Exchange Chambers were pitted against the RNLI, West Kirby Sailing Club and Merseyside Police.
Lord Mayor Geoffrey Watt started the day off which saw some furious paddling from the teams as they battled against each other and the clock. The key to a fast time was not just sheer strength but being able to row in time and keep a good rhythm.
It was a great team building event and a perfect lesson in the power of working together as one unit.
Each race saw three long boats filled with teams between 11 and 17 people sprinted across a few hundred meters at the sailing club end of the lake, with the top six fastest teams going through to the next round & ultimately, the finals.
Normally there would be the top 9 teams but due to the England’ s World Cup quarter final against Sweden, it was decided to cut the racing a touch short this year.
In a closely fought final, culminating in a photo finish, the winners were West Kirby Sailing Club, swapping wind for arm power in a very hard fought but well deserved win.
