Sometimes a specialist radiologist can pick up features of endometriosis which may help in treatment planning . These are dynamic pelvic ultrasound and MRI scan . Sometimes you may need a colonoscopy ( examination of inside of the bowel ), or cystoscopy ( examination of inside of the bladder ).
surgeons working in multidisciplinary teams including Endometriosis surgeons , radiologists , colorectal ( bowel ) surgeons , urologists , pain consultants , psychosexual therapist , and endometriosis specialist nurses . These work together in an Endometriosis centre deciding with each woman the best treatment for her .
Hysterectomy may occasionally be considered when families are complete and in cases of adenomyosis when endometriosis is involving the muscle of the womb . Most of the time this is however not the first recommended option as the disease is outside of the uterus ( womb ).
Is there a link between endometriosis and cancer ? Currently significant immunological and genetic research studies are being undertaken to answer this question . Although there is no direct proven link that endometriosis causes cancer , there is a rare known entity of ovarian cancer ( Endometrioid adenocarcinoma ) which is known to occur in endometriosis tissue .
Where can I get help ? Endometriosis severely affects a woman ’ s quality of life often from a young age . Diagnosis and management of endometriosis is best performed by a specialist team with individualised patient centred care .

Treatment Treatment options will depend on your symptoms and are broadly divided into four groups :
• Hormone treatment or hormones to cause temporary menopause
• Pain management
• Fertility treatment
• Surgical excision
Every woman is different and individualised care is extremely important .
If surgery is required , then excision ( removal ) rather than ablation ( burning ) is recognised as the best surgical treatment . This is also recommended to be performed by highly trained endometriosis
