INTERIOR INSPIRATION BY KATE KINGSTON Kate Kingston, Managing Director of Kingston Shaw, an award winning interior design company with offices on the Wirral, London and Dubai, shares with us the latest trends for creating the perfect home. THE FUTURE IS SO BRIGHT WE ARE ALL WEARING SHADES!!! Happy New Year Darling Reader, here’s hoping your festive season was stylish and fun? So it is that time of the year when we cast our runes on the marble table of prophecy to see what the year will hold true for interiors, this is what they said would be the trends for 2020! 1. VELVET Velvet may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s going to be steaming hot and trendy in 2020. It’s the perfect blend of luxury and comfort. When most people think of velvet, they often think about the old red velvet upholstery of yesteryear. This year and into the next, we are taking a deep dive into velvet design options, particularly for upholstery. And, the colour options are wider than ever. We are talking vibrant blues, pinks, burnt orange and shades of taupe. The possibilities for velvet furniture in 2020 are endless. Consumers and designers alike have heeded the call and have demanded that more recyclable woods are used for furniture. Organic materials are sourced and generally more consideration is given to the design of our homes and offices in terms of sustainability. Combining this ethos with natural plants not only contributes to your home’s organic aesthetic but still promotes a clean, environmentally friendly home. High tech houses were in, but 2020 is all about getting back and giving back to nature. Bedrooms and bathrooms are transformed into ethereal spaces created by using rich earthy elements including metals, wood, and stone. Orange Velvet Stool www.cultfurniture.com 2. CANOPY BEDS There is something regal, luxurious and comforting about a canopy bed. We have noticed that the trends for 2020 have more than a whiff of nostalgia about them so it is no surprise to see a classic bed coming back. One of the marvellous things about a canopy bed is that it can create a serene or a dramatic environment within your room. Your bed becomes an oasis of style and comfort. Canopy beds are great in any bedroom, but you have to consider the size and frame of the bed to avoid the look becoming heavy-handed and bulky. For a tester canopy, you can choose to layer fabrics or incorporate a light breathable fabric that still turns your ordinary bed into a lavish sleeping experience. 4. FEMININE DESIGN Gone are the harsh lines of masculine design, the greys and inky blues and welcome in fluid, curvaceous and textures, all that is good about feminine, design. Think pink in dusky hues, putty and blush, embrace the feminine and you will be bang on trend for 2020. Cocktail Sofa, www.dunelm.com Moroccan Four Poster Bed, www.getlaidbeds.co.uk 3. BIOPHILIA DESIGN Biophilia is a relatively new trend that incorporates human design and natural elements in a way that seems organic not manufactured. As we learn more about our environment and try to be more sustainable, we want to retain our luxury whilst not hurting our precious planet. 66 wirrallife.com 5. EARTH TONES Our final trend takes a look at earth tones. The colours and textures mimic that of wood, metals, and foliage found in nature’s most basic elements that are regularly used in the making of furniture and home accessories. Earth tones like rich forest greens, taupe, and clay colours create a natural look that creates a zen-like environment made for meditation and unwinding after a long day.
