REVIEW OF DIANE SETTERFIELD 'ONCE UPON A RIVER' BY SUE PORTER
Author of the Thirteenth Tale which was a New York
Times bestseller. Her new book is Once Upon a River.
Set during the 19th Century on the River Thames. Part
folklore and part mystery it will wind itself around you as
your devour each page.
The opening chapter begins on a winter's night in an
old Inn on the River Thames. The locals are enjoying
their evening retelling old tales of times gone by whilst
drinking their ale. A cold, dark night, suddenly the door
bursts open, a man carrying a soaking wet doll staggers
in. He is in a bad way, with a swollen and bloodied face.
He hollers as he sways on his feet. The local men grab
him and help as he collapses into a chair. Who is he?
What does he carry? Who has hurt him? The doll is wet
and prised from his fingers. There is a shout as the locals
realise the soaking wet, limp doll is not a doll at all... So
the tale begins, the questions are asked and the mystery
unfolds. If you like stories with a twist and turn, slightly
mystical this is one for you.
Diane will be talking about her new book on 6th
