THE TOP 5 KITCHEN TRENDS OF 2019 BY WHITE FEATHER DESIGN Whilst in some areas of the home, staying bang up to date with current interior trends can be achieved with the addition of a rug or a couple of cushions, when it comes to replacing a kitchen, only the finest materials and quality workmanship will stand the test of time. That said, kitchens are just as subject to changing trends as any other area of the home, and no-one wants to spend thousands on a kitchen that’s already passed it’s sell-by date, so for some expert design advice, we turned to Paul and Craig of White Feather Design in Birkenhead for their take on the top 5 kitchen trends for 2019. 1. COLOUR Whilst white and monochrome will always have their place, in line with the rest of the home, the biggest trend in kitchen interior design this year is colour. Whether it’s a single radiator or cupboard or the whole kitchen, customers are getting braver and using coloured accent doors (perhaps mixed with light or dark wood) to display their personality. Suppliers are upping their game and extending the range of coloured doors available, with some gorgeous pale pinks and mustards coming into the showroom this year. Matt Black is the new Stainless Steel when it comes to appliances, with Samsung seaming to lead the way with their range of Matt appliances. 2. COMPLEMENTARY SURFACES Surfaces in the kitchen are becoming a little more subdued and rooted in tradition than we’ve seen in recent years, perhaps with a view to toning down the impact of a dash of colour. The forms and shapes of kitchens remain modern, but the use of interesting materials and textures give a nod to traditional methods and practices: honed marble, natural wood, plastered walls, and polished concrete will all make an appearance in the well-dressed kitchen this year. 3. GREEN IS THE NEW BLUE Whether subdued olive or deep forest, interesting green tones are big this year. A green kitchen conjures up a host of adjectives from classic and welcoming, warm and cozy, to luxe and calm. We’ve seen a lot of classic British Racing Green cabinetry mixed with pale marble surfaces as an update on the dark grey that has dominated over the last few years, and these look especially classy when teamed walnut woods and leather door pulls to give a little lift. 4. GOLD I know that many of us are old enough to remember with a shudder the period of the nineties where gold dolphin taps were considered the ‘bees knees’, but try and put that memory firmly from your heads as gold is back with a vengeance! This time round, however, this metallic favourite is fresh and new. Manufacturers are offering up gold patina’s, rose golds, black golds, bright golds and mixing them with high end appliances and raw organics. This finish has never looked so good as a new traditional with a twist. 5. 70’S RETRO A continuing trend, not least because it effortlessly blends so well with the industrial look to bring it bang up to date, seventies styling is everywhere. Colour wise, there’s a real focus on rich, earthy tones like mustard yellow, ochre, olive green, chocolate and camel. If you’re feeling brave you can use these on your cabinetry and even appliances, but if you’re not 100 % sure how to use it, you can build up gradually with mugs and tea-towels before taking the plunge with an iconic sideboard or some new tiles. If you’re planning a kitchen update in the New Year and want to make sure you get the styling bang on, why not drop into their beautiful showroom and talk through the current trends in Kitchen design?
