ACROSS THE MERSEY SWIM CELEBRATES 33 YEARS
The 33rd Anniversary Across the Mersey Swim once again proved why it remains one of the UK’ s most iconic open water events, with 184 swimmers successfully completing the crossing on Saturday, 1 August.
Strong north-westerly winds created challenging conditions, but every swimmer reached the finish safely, reflecting both the determination of participants and the careful planning behind the event.
This year’ s swim was dedicated to the memory of family and friends, with a special tribute to the late Chris Lewis. His Merseytri and tri-4-life friends raised funds for St John’ s Hospice in his honour. Swimmers were waved off from Liverpool by the Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside, Peter Oliver OBE, and the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor William Shortall, before finishing at Monks Ferry, where they were welcomed by the Mayor of Wirral, Councillor Mary Jordan.
Event Director Liam Hanlon thanked the many organisations and volunteers involved, including Marine Fire 1, HM Coastguard, Wirral Council, Peel Ports, Mersey Vessel Traffic Services, safety boat crews, canoe teams and first aid personnel. The event also continued its strong charitable tradition, with participants supporting a wide range of local causes, including All in for Fin.
Every swimmer and support crew member received a commemorative medal and a“ Bevie Across the Mersey” courtesy of principal supporter Glen Affric. For future events, visit www. tri-4-life. com.
