THINGS I AM DOING NOW I AM( NEARLY) 40!
By Doctor Rachael Syvret of Underlining Beauty
At the end of this year, I am turning 40. Although I don’ t feel too stressed about that,(“ life begins at 40” and all that jazz), it has made me reflect on things I do now that I didn’ t do when I was younger.
Obviously, this change is across the board in many ways. But for the purposes of this article, I am keeping it“ aesthetic” focussed.
So, I am ashamed to admit it, but yes, I did used to be a face wipe girl. Quick and convenient was the moto of my skincare when I was younger. It is crazy to think of the difference between teenagers now and teenagers then. These days, girls are much more into their skincare, whereas I survived with a pack of Simple wipes and a Garnier moisturiser. I wish I could go back and tell 22-year-old me that I had far more time for a 7-step skincare routine then than I do now, juggling work and two kids!
But to be honest, it did the job. Well,“ it” didn’ t but my skin did for itself. So, a bit of science. Roughly speaking, when we are in our 20s, our skin cells renew( turnover) every 20 days, in our 30s, every 30 days, in our 40s, every 40 days and so on. The longer a cell’ s lifetime the less well it functions. The less collagen and elastin a skin cell produces. As a result, the skin loses elasticity, firmness and appears thin and dull. So, my 22-year-old skin didn’ t need a whole host of skincare to make it look good, because it was doing that all by itself. Fast forward a couple of decades and it now needs some help!
Skincare In my opinion, skincare is massively UNDER rated. People will happily spend hundreds of pounds on injectables but worry about spending their money on skincare. I think this is because the skincare world is packed with products all claiming to be the best things since sliced bread and we don’ t know what we can trust. If you make sure you use a skincare that is backed by scientific research, it is money well spent. Don’ t get me wrong, injectables still have their place, but I have noticed a significant difference in how frequently I need to get my injectables done now that I use the ALASTIN Skincare range.
Injectables The aesthetic market has grown rapidly over the past decade. There is much more of a focus on“ rejuvenate” aesthetics in the past couple of years, with the likes of Profhilo, Sculptra and Polynucleotides taking the forefront in the injectable leadership race. I love having each of these regularly. Profhilo, to give my skin that glow and hydration whilst banking collagen. Polynucleotides, to help rejuvenate the crepey dull skin to my under eyes and eye lids. Sculptra, to help with production of the really strong structuring type of collagen in our skin to help reduce laxity to the jawline and jowl area.
Now, this isn’ t to say that I won’ t have any more filler again. But it does mean that I need filler less frequently, and less of it, which in turn means I can maintain as natural a look as possible, whilst still trying to hold back the clock.
Water I mean how hard can it be?! Just as I was a face wipe girl. I am also a cup of tea girl. My biscuit just doesn’ t quite go right with a glass of water. But I am trying!
Bring on 40! When I definitely won’ t be drinking water or tea to celebrate!!
