DESIGNING THE HEART OF THE HOME: HOW WIRRAL FAMILIES ARE REDEFINING MODERN LIVING

It’ s been an exciting year for Wirral Kitchens & Interiors, who have been shortlisted for the prestigious KBBFocus Awards 2025. Winners will be announced on 4th December at The Brewery in London— a proud recognition of the company’ s craftsmanship, creativity, and commitment to designing exceptional spaces that reflect how people really live today.
As part of our Lifestyle & Design feature, we caught up with one of the team’ s design experts to talk about how Wirral families are using their kitchens, the growing trend for open-plan living, and why thoughtful design is about so much more than style alone.
Lifestyle Angle Kitchens are often described as the“ heart of the home.” In your experience, how are Wirral families using their kitchens today? Absolutely— the kitchen has evolved far beyond a place to cook; it’ s now where family life happens. On the Wirral, we’ re seeing more and more families using their kitchens as multi-purpose spaces— a hub for cooking, eating, working, relaxing, and entertaining. It’ s where conversations happen, where the kids do their homework, and where friends gather over a glass of wine. The kitchen really is the heartbeat of daily life, so it has to function beautifully while feeling inviting.
Do you see kitchens becoming more like living spaces than just cooking spaces? Definitely. One of the biggest design shifts has been the move towards open-plan living. Families are removing walls and blending kitchen, dining, and living areas to create open, flexible spaces. This allows everything— cooking, relaxing, socialising— to happen together. It reflects how people live today: more connected, more informal, and much more focused on shared experiences.
Design Expertise & Guidance How do you help clients balance practical needs like storage and layout with style and luxury? The secret is to start with function. Before we talk about colours or finishes, I focus on understanding how the client will use the space— who cooks, how they entertain, whether it’ s a busy family kitchen or a calm retreat. Once that’ s clear, we design a smart layout with the right flow, storage, and lighting. Then we layer in the style— the textures, tones, and features that bring luxury to everyday living. The goal is a kitchen that looks stunning but works seamlessly day to day.
What’ s the most common mistake people make when planning a new kitchen, and how do you guide them past it? A very common mistake is focusing purely on looks and overlooking how the space will actually function. Practical details like workflow, lighting, storage, and power points can get forgotten in the excitement of choosing finishes. I guide clients to think first about how they live— how they cook, how often they entertain, what their routines look like. From there, we design a layout around their lifestyle. That’ s what makes a kitchen both beautiful and effortless to use.
For homeowners working with smaller spaces, what clever design tricks make a big difference? Smaller kitchens can be just as elegant and luxurious— it’ s all about smart design. Pull-out larders, deep drawers, and corner units maximise every inch. Lighter colours help open up the room, while multi-functional features like breakfast bars that double as prep or dining space make the kitchen feel bigger and work harder. It’ s about creating flow and flexibility without clutter.
Future & Inspiration Have any of your projects been influenced by global design trends or places you’ ve travelled to? Absolutely. European and Scandinavian design have a huge influence— I love their simplicity, craftsmanship, and emphasis on natural materials. It’ s about balancing practicality with warmth: clean lines, tactile textures, and lighting that makes a space feel calm and inviting. These global influences help create kitchens that feel both modern and timeless.
How do you see technology and smart features shaping the way we use our kitchens in the next few years? Technology is evolving fast, and it’ s transforming the kitchen more than any other room. Smart appliances, voice-controlled lighting, and appconnected cooking tools are already part of daily life for many clients. In the coming years, I think we’ ll see kitchens become even more intuitive— with features that help plan meals, save energy, reduce waste, and create a more personalised experience. The result will be spaces that are not just stylish, but intelligent and efficient— true smart hearts of the home.
A Personal Touch Finally, what’ s the most rewarding part of seeing a client walk into their finished kitchen for the first time? That moment never gets old. Watching a client’ s face light up when they see their new kitchen for the first time is incredibly special. It’ s not just about cabinetry or colour schemes— it’ s about creating a space that changes how they live every day. When a client says,“ This feels like us,” that’ s the best feedback you can get. At Wirral Kitchens & Interiors, every project begins with understanding how people live— their routines, their tastes, and their vision for their home. The aim is always the same: to design a kitchen that feels effortless, looks beautiful, and becomes the true heart of the home.
