ACROSS THE MERSEY 2025: CELEBRATING THE 32ND ANNIVERSARY OF A HISTORIC SWIM
This year’ s historic and iconic swim began in the toughest conditions seen in over twenty years.
A strong southerly wind gusted against the tide, creating one of the most challenging— yet exhilarating— crossings for everyone taking part. Of the 150 registered swimmers, 13 were a no-show on the day, 10 deferred their entries until next year, and 2 turned back shortly after starting. The 125 participants who successfully made the crossing endured an incredible adventure: battling six-foot waves, plunging into bottomless troughs, and being swept in all directions as they pushed towards the Wirral shoreline and Monks Ferry.
The swimmers were waved off by the Lord- Lieutenant of Merseyside, Mr Mark Blundell, and the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Barbara Murray, who joined the Deputy Mayor of Wirral, Councillor Mary Jordan, at the finish line to congratulate and present medals to all finishers.
The Mayor praised Tri-4-Life and event organiser Liam Hanlon and his team for their exceptional professionalism in ensuring the highest standards of safety, management, and control throughout the event. She said it was a testament to the diversity and inclusivity of the swim to see participants of all sexes, ages, and abilities taking part. Despite the demanding conditions, the sense of camaraderie was unmistakable, with huge team hugs and smiles on every face as they crossed the finish line.
Liam extended his thanks to all the support craft on the river, the shore management and safety teams, and the crews from Marine Fire 1 and the Coastguard. Special thanks also went to Ruth Embleton from Wirral Council, Joe Blythe from Peel Ports, and the staff at Mersey VTS for their invaluable support with pre-event logistics and onthe-day coordination.
All swimmers and support crews were presented with a commemorative hat and a“ Bevie Across the Mersey” from the main event supporter, Glen Affric.
