The Grill at Thornton Hall by Si Hall & Nicky Rigby
Laid-back luxury dining – with a bold new identity
There’ s a new chapter unfolding at Thornton Hall Hotel— and it’ s delicious. The hotel has recently unveiled The Grill, a bold and exciting new dining concept that officially replaces the longestablished Lawns restaurant.
But while the name and vibe may be new, rest assured: the quality, creativity, and attention to detail remain every bit as exceptional. The Grill brings a broader, more approachable menu, while still championing the fresh, seasonal produce and expert technique that Thornton Hall is known for.
Gone is the formality of traditional fine dining— in its place is a more modern, relaxed experience with an emphasis on flavour, flexibility, and flair. Whether you ' re in the mood for a refined seafood dish, a hearty classic, or something shareable and social, The Grill delivers across the board.
What We Ate
We were invited to explore the new menu— and what a journey it was. Here ' s just a taste of what we sampled:
Burrata – A perfect summer starter. Creamy, rich and silky, paired with Isle of Wight tomatoes, pesto, extra virgin olive oil, and a drizzle of aged balsamic. Fresh, simple, and stunning.
Pea & Ham Soup – Comforting yet elegant, served with a crisp pork croquette that gave the dish a beautifully indulgent twist.
BBQ’ d Hispi Cabbage – A surprise favourite. Smoky and sweet with a silky wild garlic mayo that elevated the humble cabbage to something seriously moreish.
The Verdict
The Grill at Thornton Hall Hotel is a confident and welcome evolution— a fresh concept that makes the most of its fine dining heritage while embracing a more relaxed, contemporary approach.
You can drop in for a casual bite or settle in for a full three-course dinner. Either way, expect elegant flavours, beautifully plated dishes, and a menu that feels inclusive without compromising on quality.
It ' s still luxury— just with the formality turned down and the flavour turned all the way up.

King Prawn Cocktail – A reimagined classic with cos lettuce and chicory, offering a refreshing crunch to go with the sweet prawns.
Pan-Fried Scallop with Lobster Ravioli – A standout dish. The scallop was perfectly seared, the squid ink pasta dramatic and delicate, and the lobster bisque luxuriously smooth.
Liverpool Bay Seabass – Crisp-skinned and full of flavour, served with a seafood braisage and a beautiful courgette flower stuffed with scallop— a dish as stunning visually as it was on the palate.
Summer Black Truffle Gnocchi – Decadent, rich and deeply satisfying, topped with aged hard cheese and full of savoury depth.
Duck Breast – Cooked pink with a peppery kick from the green peppercorn jus, lightened by a zesty summer salad.
Thornton Hall Cheeseburger – A crowd-pleaser done properly. A juicy 8oz beef patty, crispy bacon, melty British cheddar, and all the right toppings, served with golden hand-cut chips.
