A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN AESTHETICS PRACTITIONER
By Doctor Rachael Syvret of Underlining Beauty
It is safe to say that in my life, two days are certainly never the same. As a busy mum of two; juggling school runs, after school clubs, washing loads, homework, tantrums and cuddles, I do wonder how the heck I manage to fit in one job, never mind the four that I have! Four jobs?! Yes, four! I am an NHS GP, I do private GP work, and I have my own aesthetics business and my own aesthetics training academy.
But, hold on … before you start feeling too sorry for me, I do still also have time to fit in weekly Pilates classes, getting my steps in with friends, fortnightly lash infills, monthly dying of the greys and three weekly nail appointments. Oh, and the odd dinner out here or there to avoid bedtimes too! So, what’ s the secret? It’ s no secret; I became self-employed.
Now don’ t get me wrong, I absolutely love my job as a GP, but it’ s long hours, a lot of stress and not that flexible when you have oncall obligations to fulfil.
So, for me, I have managed to strike the perfect balance.
I currently work two days per week as a GP, and two days per week as an aesthetics practitioner and trainer. This means, on the days that I have my GP hat on, I can give my all to my patients. I’ m not running on empty like some full time GP’ s on the brink of burnout. But, on the days I work in aesthetics I can run my own diary. Sports day? I’ m there. Secret reader? Count me in. Sneaky little blow dry or massage? I’ ll finish clinic an hour early that day.
The clients coming through the door range from 18 years old to 70 years old. We chat, we catch up on life. They occasionally try to get me to look at a rash that just won’ t go … I can’ t blame them; we all know how difficult it can be to get a GP appointment! The day goes by in the blink of an eye. From botox, to fillers, to Profhilo and fat dissolving injections, the work is varied. It keeps me busy and engaged and it really doesn’ t feel like“ work.”
Before I know it, the last client has been and gone and it’ s time to shut up shop for the day and go and pick up the mini humans.
Armed with snacks( god help me if I can’ t immediately give them food the moment they step out of preschool and school!) I pick up the girls. We head home and it’ s time for dinner, washing, after school clubs, bath time, story time and sleepy goodnight kisses.
I would be lying if I said it wasn’ t difficult at times. Of course it is. I don’ t always strike the right balance and sometimes the girls flatly refuse to eat what I have lovingly made them for dinner, or put up a fight about going to bed. But, on the whole, I can’ t complain and I have made choices and changes to my life to try and relieve the stress where I can, and get the best work / life balance possible.
Parents, I salute you!

So, what does a day in aesthetics look like?
After school drop off, I drive to clinic, open up and set up for the day.“ Alexa, play Hits Radio Chilled” is called as I walk through the door and the kettle is flicked on. Then, after my collagen coffee has hit the spot, I am ready for my first client.
