DISCOVERING DUBAI: A PERSONAL JOURNEY INTO ARABIA’ S JEWEL
by Sarah Meadowcroft, Founder of Global Travel talks all things travel...
I’ ve been travelling to Dubai since I was a small child, and something about it always felt familiar— like stepping into a dream that began with the story of Aladdin. Maybe it was the shimmering sands or the sense of mystery that hung in the air, but even from a young age, I was completely intrigued by Arabia. Dubai has always felt like home, regardless of how it has changed over the past 40-plus years.
Dubai is a city where tradition meets innovation, where ancient souks sit beside towering skyscrapers. Over the years, I’ ve watched it evolve into one of the world’ s most luxurious and exciting destinations. The standards of comfort, service, and opulence here are truly unmatched.
While it’ s a paradise for families— offering endless thrills at Wild Wadi Waterpark, Atlantis Aquaventure, and the indoor wonderland of IMG Worlds of Adventure— Dubai is just as dazzling for adults. The city boasts a vibrant social scene, perfect for couples, friends, and solo travellers seeking a sophisticated escape. Sleek beach clubs like Drift, Nammos, and Nikki Beach serve up glamour with ocean views, chilled beats, and five-star service. By night, Dubai transforms into a world of elegant rooftop bars, speakeasies, and sky-high lounges. Whether you’ re sipping cocktails at Cé La Vi with the Burj Khalifa glittering nearby, or enjoying a glass of wine in the low-lit ambiance of Zuma or Galaxy Bar, the nightlife here is just as refined as it is unforgettable.
Shopping, too, is part of the adult indulgence. The vast Dubai Mall is more than just a shopping destination— it’ s a lifestyle hub, offering everything from luxury brands and fine dining to ice skating and an aquarium. And if you prefer something more boutique, the Alserkal Avenue arts district or the stylish shops at City Walk offer unique finds.
One of the places I return to time and again is the 5-star Banyan Tree Dubai, located on Bluewaters Island. It’ s my favourite hotel in the city— offering five-star luxury with a calm, understated elegance. Wellness is part of its soul: think complimentary yoga sessions during the day, calming interiors, and attentive service that never feels overbearing. It’ s a sanctuary where you can unwind completely.
Bluewaters Island itself is one of Dubai’ s gems. This stylish, manmade island sits just off the coast of Jumeirah Beach Residence and blends beachfront living with urban energy. Home to Ain Dubai, the world’ s largest observation wheel, the island also features a curated mix of restaurants, art, and boutique shopping, all set against sweeping views of the Arabian Gulf.
With a year-round temperate climate, Dubai is the ultimate destination for sun-seekers, adventurers, and those simply looking to recharge in style.
Whether you’ re travelling with kids, a partner, or friends— or even going solo— Dubai has something magical to offer everyone.
