WIRRAL LIFE TALK TO AMY & MARC THE FOUNDERS OF MELYR
In the ever-evolving world of fashion retail, adaptability and innovation are key to survival. Few understand this better than husband-and-wife duo, Amy and Marc, whose combined decades of experience in the industry have led them to create Melyr- a Wirral fashion brand designed to empower and inspire independent women with grown-up bodies.
Marc’ s career in fashion retail began with Giancarlo Ricci, the highly regarded, luxury clothing store, based in Liverpool’ s city centre. Established in 1983, the family-run business became a destination for discerning customers seeking luxury designer brands. However, as the industry shifted, independent boutiques being pushed aside by multinational giants and sportswear chains, Marc saw the writing on the wall. The time had come to diversify.
Then came the catalyst for change: Covid. This global disruption provided an unexpected opportunity to reassess, reset, and take a bold new direction. Together, Amy and Marc set out to use their expertise in retail and e-commerce to build something of their own, something meaningful, something needed.
The name Melyr is deeply rooted in their connection to the Wirral. Inspired by the Viking name for Moels— Melr— the brand carries a nod to British heritage while celebrating their love for their beautiful home region.
Amy’ s personal experience became the spark for Melyr. Frustrated with shopping trips that ended in disappointment, she found it increasingly difficult to find stylish, well-fitting clothing for her midlife curves. If she, a size 14 woman was struggling, what about the millions of other women across the UK, where the average size is 16, yet mainstream retailers rarely cater for anyone beyond a size 16 or 18?
Thus, Melyr was born. Their mission is to offer timeless, flattering, and functional fashion that make women feel confident and empowered, but most importantly comfortable.
Beyond the clothing, Amy and Marc are cultivating a community of women who believe in slow fashion— choosing quality over quantity, mindful shopping over mass production.
What sets Melyr apart isn’ t just the product, it’ s the people behind it. Amy and Marc are hands-on in every aspect, from the design of the products & packaging to marketing and fulfilment, and most importantly, customer service. Speaking directly with their customers is their greatest asset, whether that’ s picking up the phone for a chat or hand-delivering local orders to meet the women wearing their products. As a small but mighty team, they understand the importance of growing sustainably, producing styles and colours based on customer requests rather than fast fashion trends.
Brand building from scratch has been a massive undertaking. Even for two experienced business owners. From day one, Amy realized that being the face of the brand resonated with Melyr’ s audience far more than any expensive model shoot. At first, the idea of stepping into the spotlight was daunting, but the overwhelming messages of support from women across the UK transformed her self-confidence. Melyr is about more than just fashion, it’ s about representation. Midlife women often feel overlooked, their needs ignored, and their presence in fashion reduced to tokenism. Melyr aims to change that by becoming a truly community-led brand.
As Melyr approaches its first anniversary, Amy and Marc are eager to celebrate their incredible journey with the people who matter most, their customers. The past year has been filled with growth, learning, and immense gratitude for the support they’ ve received from local business owners, regional business support initiatives, and community-driven events.
Proudly based in Wirral, Melyr is more than just a brand, it’ s a movement, and this is only the beginning.
