A CASE STUDY IN BESPOKE EXCELLENCE : THE FARR HALL RENOVATION BY JOHN EVANS OF BORTRAM LUXURY HOMES

This philosophy was at the heart of our work with Dr . Santiago Puig , a man with impeccable taste and high expectations . When we first met two years ago to discuss property renovation , it became clear that his vision was as ambitious as it was inspiring .
The Vision : Transforming Farr Hall Dr . Puig invited us to lunch to discuss his newest project , Farr Hall , a stunning Edwardian building with a Victorian ballroom extension in Lower Heswall . He had acquired the flat above his existing property and commissioned us to merge the two into a seamless duplex . His brief was clear : the renovation should enhance the original Edwardian and Victorian styles while incorporating state-of-the-art modern living .
Dr . Puig insisted the transformation must feel like it had always been one cohesive home . To achieve this , we stripped the building to its core — removing false ceilings , stud walls , and even pipework — to expose and celebrate the original high ceilings and period features .
Creating the Dream Home The project was a delicate balance of respecting the building ’ s history while introducing bespoke , modern elements to suit the client ’ s lifestyle :
• Coffered Ceiling with Marine-Style Backlighting Inspired by ancient Greek and Roman architecture , this hallmark of traditional interiors became a centerpiece . Backlighting the ceiling with marine-style “ Cobb lighting ” added a contemporary yet timeless touch .
• The Two Islands Concept : The kitchen features two distinct islands — one for cooking and another for entertaining . The entertaining island offers breathtaking views of the Dee Estuary and Welsh coastline .
• Chandelier Perfection : Initially met with scepticism , we designed a mock-up for Dr . Puig to visualize three chandeliers in the kitchen . The morning light reflecting off the prisms created a magical effect , winning him over instantly .
Bespoke Features Throughout From the custom oak and glass staircase leading to a cosy snug room with bi-fold doors opening to a heated balcony , to the hotel-style main bedroom complete with a freestanding bathtub overlooking the estuary , every detail was carefully considered .
The crowning jewel was a four-sided glass shower cube with a privacy panel , allowing Dr . Puig to shower while enjoying the panoramic views — a request we achieved through innovation and precision .
