JOHN LENNON “ IMAGINE ” JACKET TO BE OFFERED AT LIVERPOOL AUCTION HOUSE
The iconic black velvet jacket sported throughout the early 1970s and extensively in the Imagine film by Liverpool ’ s most famous son will be going under the hammer at Adam Partridge ’ s Liverpool Saleroom on Thursday 5th December 2024 .
Originally purchased from Take 6 by Apple promo man Tony King , the blazer , adorned by the gold star lapel badge , a souvenir from John ’ s Sgt Pepper days - was gifted to Una , the wife of Harry Nilsson , after she took a shine to it while they were all staying at the Pierre Hotel . Harry recalls : " The jacket was originally part of a suit . However , even though John loved the jacket and wore it a lot in New York and on the West Coast … as for the pants that go with the jacket , Winston HATED them !"
Previously , the jacket has been displayed in the company of John ’ s famous army jacket in the Hard Rock Café before being offered at auction in 2000 at the Beatle ’ s Convention to celebrate the opening of LIPA , Paul McCartney ’ s performing Arts School . From then on it has been exhibited at the Beatles Story Museum and has been viewed by millions of visitors who have made pilgrimage to pay homage to the Merseyside ’ s most famous export .
Adam Partridge says “ This truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to offer an item owned and made famous by one of the most important figures of the 20th century . Having had an auction house in Liverpool for nearly 15 years , it is an honour to be selling such an iconic piece in the city that created the ‘ band that changed the world ,’ and there is no more fitting place than Liverpool to see the jacket come to market .”
In a fitting tribute to its original owner , the vendor of the jacket will be donating a percentage of the proceeds to the Lennon Imagine Trust , as well as to support new musical initiatives in schools in Liverpool .
The auction will be held on Thursday 5th December , at Adam Partridge ’ s Liverpool Saleroom on Jordan Street , Liverpool , L1 0BP , with the jacket being offered for sale at 2pm . The jacket will remain at the Beatles Story until the auction for fans to enjoy it for as long as possible .
The Liverpool Saleroom was the second auction house opened by Adam Partridge , following the establishment of The Cheshire Saleroom in Macclesfield in 2008 , and has proved a popular venue with both sellers and buyers across the country , particularly for those who have a keen interest in Rock & Pop , as well as Maritime , both categories deeply enmeshed in the musical and naval history of this beautiful city .
Today , Adam & Melissa Partridge head up the largest independently owned auction house in the UK , with auction rooms in Macclesfield , Liverpool , London and Devon , as well as valuation offices in Altrincham , Preston , Lancaster & Torquay , many of which can be regularly seen on a multitude of antiques television programmes , such as BBCs “ Flog It ”; on which Adam was an on-screen expert for 17 years . The business is a real family affair , with the London Saleroom being run by Adam ’ s eldest son , Ridley , and the team at the Cheshire Saleroom being made up with a large number of the next generation of Partridges !
