IMPROVING YOUR BUNKER TECHNIQUE
BY TOM ATKINSON , PGA GOLF PROFESSIONAL
Bunker play is one of the most challenging aspects of golf , often causing anxiety even for experienced players . However , with the right technique and mindset , you can turn a potential hazard into an opportunity to showcase your skills . Here ’ s how to approach bunker shots with confidence and consistency .
Understanding the Basics
The key to successful bunker play is understanding the unique dynamics of sand . Unlike hitting from grass , where you aim to make direct contact with the ball , bunker shots require you to strike the sand behind the ball , allowing the sand to propel the ball out of the bunker and onto the green . The depth of the sand , the lie of the ball , and the distance to the pin all influence the type of shot you should play .
• Stance and Alignment : Start by taking a wider stance than usual to ensure stability , with your feet slightly open ( aiming left of the target for right-handed players ). Dig your feet into the sand to get a solid base and to gauge the texture of the sand . Your body weight should favour your front foot , about 60-70 %, which helps you stay grounded and maintain balance throughout the swing . Open your clubface to increase the loft and allow the club to glide through the sand rather than digging in . This will also employ the bounce of your wedge which is designed to interact correctly with the sand .
• Grip and Posture : Use a lighter grip than usual , holding the club just enough to maintain control without tension . Your hands should be slightly ahead of the ball . This positioning helps you make the clean , DOWNWARD strike necessary for effective bunker play , many players get confused and try to scoop the ball from the bunker .
Swing Mechanics : The swing in bunker play is more of an abbreviated version of your full swing . Focus on a smooth , controlled motion with a full follow-through . Your backswing should be slightly longer than your follow-through , with the emphasis on striking the sand about 1-2 inches behind the ball . Don ’ t be afraid to accelerate through the shot ; a confident swing with sufficient speed ensures the club head glides through the sand , lifting the ball out of the bunker .
Reading the Lie
Not all bunker lies are the same . A buried lie ( where the ball is partially or fully submerged in the sand ) requires a different approach compared to a clean lie . To understand these techniques further , book a lesson with us and we can go through it together .
Mental Approach
Confidence is crucial in bunker play . Approach the shot with a positive mindset , trusting your technique . Visualize the shot you want to play and commit fully to your swing . Remember , the bunker is not a place to fear , but an opportunity to demonstrate skill and creativity . A professional would much rather be in a bunker than just outside it as maximum spin and control can be imparted on the shot from the sand .
Practice Drills
To improve your bunker play , practice hitting from different lies and distances . Set up targets at various points on the practice green and work on landing the ball softly and accurately . Consistent practice will build your confidence and refine your technique . By mastering these fundamentals and practicing regularly , you can turn bunker shots from a potential disaster into one of the strengths of your golf game .
