COUNCILLOR MARY RASMUSSEN
THE RIGHT WORSHIPFUL LORD MAYOR OF LIVERPOOL
My year as Liverpool ’ s number one citizen started back in May of this year , and it has been an absolute whirlwind every day since ! Some days we may have five or six engagements , ranging from Royal visits to school assemblies , from Armed Forces events on our world famous waterfront to spending time with local charities . But I am not complaining ! I often share the wonderful company of mayors from across the city region – we are collectively dubbed ‘ the chain gang ’! What we all have in common is that we are here to serve the people of our local communities .
I am Ward Councillor for Speke in South Liverpool and I am delighted to serve the good folk of Speke and represent them as Lord Mayor of Liverpool , which is the highest compliment a politician can be paid by the city .
So , how do you become Lord Mayor of Liverpool , you may well ask ?! To be honest , it has been a ‘ long and winding road ’ and one that I could not have plotted all those years ago when I became a local councillor . Generally , the honour is bestowed on individuals who have given many years ’ service to their city , and the position is honorary and decided upon by all councillors . I am so thankful that I was deemed suitable for the post !
I am one of ten kids from Garston , South Liverpool , the proud daughter of Irish parents from Co . Mayo , Eire . My professional life has been varied , from being a qualified nurse , engineer , publican , to working with refugees . I love spending time with people , so I guess I am sort of suited to the year-long role as Lord Mayor . is ‘ Local Solutions ’, a Liverpool-based charity which works with disadvantaged young people who often ‘ fall between the cracks ’ and who struggle during these very difficult times . We are specifically targeting one programme with Local Solution , called ‘ AIMS ’. This is the programme that works entirely with young people who may be in the shocking situation of living on the streets when we first meet them .
Young people are the future of Liverpool and we should do we all can to give ALL children and youth the chance to flourish and prosper .
I am fortunate to have a dedicated team of fundraisers who organise a number of fundraiser events , from Gala Dinners to Dragon Boat races , from Sporting Greats afternoon to Lord Mayor ’ s luncheons . Every penny we raise goes 100 % directly to ‘ Local Solutions ’. We have set an ambitious target but , given the generosity of the people of Merseyside , recognised as the most generous place in the UK , I am sure we will achieve this , and help benefit massively the charity .
If you think you can help the Lord Mayor ’ s charity fundraising in any way please contact the Town Hall on 0151 233 4651 or town . hall @ liverpool . gov . uk or donate at https :// lnkd . in / eWjU2Mrx
With very best wishes to you , your family and friends
Cllr Mary Rasmussen The Right Worshipful Lord of Liverpool
One of the key roles of any Lord Mayor is to raise funds for others less fortunate than ourselves . My chosen charity this year
