COCKTAILS OF THE MONTH By Jess B of The Library Oxton
The Paloma :
To stay on the subject of tequila , let me introduce you to the Paloma , cousin of the margarita . This national drink of Mexico consists of sharp undertones of tequila and a tart kick with the grapefruit , making it more than worth the credit it earns . With fewer steps than the classic margarita and the fact this drink can be built in a glass , makes it perfect for entertaining guests this summer . This refreshing and surprisingly complex tasting cocktail will have you feeling like you ' re living like a Housewife of Orange County .
This drink was said to be created in the 1950 ’ s , supposably by Don Javier Delardo Corona , the owner of La Capilla in Mexico . The name ‘ Paloma ’ is said to have come from the Spanish “ dove ”, with many believing it is named after the song la paloma ( the dove ) in the 1860 ’ s .
The Paloma can either be made with pink grapefruit juice and soda or a sparkling grapefruit drink , such as Fresca . The rim can also be salted if desired or by using Tajin seasoning , similar to the spicy margarita for an extra seasoning kick .
Ingredients :
• 50ml Tequila Blanco
• 15ml Lime juice
• Top with Pink Grapefruit and soda
• 15ml agave syrup or simple syrup ( this is optional if you would like it a little sweeter )
Method : Fill a highball glass with Tequila Blanco and lime juice and stir . Next add the pink grapefruit juice , fill with ice and top with soda .
Serve with a wedge of lime or a slice of pink grapefruit . It really is that easy , so freshen up your summer with this authentic tart drink .
Spicy Margarita :
Arguably one of the most popular cocktails around the world is the margarita . There have been many twists on this famous Tequila-based drink , but few made it to bar menus . However , one that has stood the test of time and is now gaining widespread notoriety is the Spicy Margarita . An exquisite blend of earthy , sweet and sour flavours with a gentle kiss of spice , it makes for the perfect combination without taking away from the authentic taste .
This variation of the margarita is relatively new on the cocktail scene and was said to be founded in the early 2000 ’ s by Julio Bermejo , the creator of the Tommy ’ s Margarita . Named after his own restaurant the Tommy ’ s Mexican restaurant in San Francisco . The tommy ’ s margarita uses a very similar method to the Spicy Margarita by using agave nectar , a natural sweetener extracted from various species of the agave plant , grown predominantly in Mexico and South Africa . This gives the drink that balance of sweet and sour , combating the tang of the lime .
Ingredients :
• 20ml Cointreau
• 20ml fresh lime juice
• 15ml agave nectar
• 50ml Blanco Tequila
• 2 / 3 slices of Jalapeños ( seeds removed )
• Tajin ( Chilli + Lime ) for rim
Method : First , rim your glass using lime juice and tajin . Grab your shaker and muddle together the jalapeños with the lime and agave nectar . At this point , feel free to throw in a few extra slices of jalapeños If you want it extra fiery . Then pour in your tequila , fill half with ice and shake .
Finally , grab your rimmed glass with the desired amount of ice and strain in your cocktail with a Hawthorne strainer . Garnish with a jalapeño slice and a lime wedge . There you have it , so spice up your summer with this tasty twist of a classic .
