TAPAS KITCHEN by Si Hall
It seems a very long time since the ‘ Wirral Life Awards ’ in 2019 ( the last time we were allowed to get 800 people in one space due to covid ) – West Kirby ’ s The Tapas Kitchen were officially voted the best restaurant on the Wirral ( two years running – 2018 & 2019 , a title they will retain until the next awards this winter ...
Managing Director , Colin invited us along to remind us just how excellent they are , as they approach their 6th birthday in October .
Tapas or small plates are still hugely popular right now , so for these guys to stand out , it surely must be something special . Literally everything about the Spanish ‘ inspired ’ menu has their own unique re-imagining of the classics , yet still , is super authentic .
In summary : The guys at The Tapas Kitchen love playing with ingredients to really push the flavour boat way out , striving to deliver fresh , simple , classic , great value , substantial dishes with their own distinct unique twist , that knocks your tastebuds out of the park . Big time . Every time .
Just excellent ! As always . Well done guys ! Booking recommended on 0151 625 8111 . 95 Banks Road , West Kirby , CH48 0RB .
And so we begin – with a Vegan dish . Mashed avocado with a lime cream , toasted croutes and a espresso cup shot of chilled gazpacho , a simple dish but a little different with the added lime cream .
Up next was a bowl of Galician style mussels , steamed with melting garlic and tomato butter , it was a good job we had a platter of stone baked rustic bread to soak up all that delicious butter .
Then there was the amazing Spanish slow cooked pulled pork taco ’ s - soft flour taco ’ s topped with pulled pork and finished off with roast pineapple and sweet chilli salsa ( sounds like a strange combination but it sure works ).
We were excited to try the ‘ Steak Bavas ’ – Fillet medallion ( served pink ) with smokey bravas sauce and grilled alioli crust . We couldn ’ t not have our favourite dish – Fabada , so good they put our name to it ( seriously , it is listed as Wirral Life ' s favourite dish on the menu , we ' ve never done this before !) Artisan chorizo , white beans , smoked paprika and because we love it some much they added a bit of Morcilla de burgos ( Spanish black pudding ). Just . Mwah ! It ' s punching every one of your Umami taste sensors - an oral orgasm .
We couldn ’ t leave without having a portion of traditional sugar and cinnamon toasted churros with peanut butter and chocolate ganache , all washed down with one of their signature – Apple Mojito ’ s , made with fresh mint , citrus juices and their custom made TTK Apple gin .
