On reflection , 2022 has been an exceptional year for Wirral PLC , but not without its significant challenges . Over the past 12 months , we engaged 1,300 businesses . Following these engagements , we know the resilience of our business leaders in 2022 has been tested to its limits . The issues testing businesses in 2022 have been a blended mix of political turmoil in Downing Street , the real-term impact of Brexit felt with rising costs of overseas orders and the dramatic pressure imposed on businesses to raise wages triggered by a cost of living crisis .
Despite the challenges , we have seen an ignition of confidence in the face of fundamental economic uncertainty ; this bucks the trend nationally . This renewed confidence is triggered by the prospect of transformational regeneration across Wirral ' s left bank , having secured significant investment thanks to a renewed confidence at the heart of government in Wirral as a place for economic growth and prosperity . In 2021 , we called on the government to put their money where their mouth is on levelling up , £ 250m of public sector investment later , giving credit where it is due ; it ' s fair to say they have .
We never fail to be impressed by the sheer tenacity of our business leaders to succeed . Their successes are Wirral ' s successes . The more successful , growing businesses we have , the more jobs and wealth generated , spreading prosperity across our communities . This spirit of social value is now a major priority for our business community , with over 70 % of Wirral businesses prioritising sustainability as we advance into 2023 . As a result , Wirral Chamber will also be reflecting this with a renewed focus on the impact we make across Wirral , helping businesses to unlock more opportunities to make a difference - This is following in the footsteps of our forebears who prided themselves on delivering social justice . As we celebrate our 110th anniversary this year , we also reflect on the transformation our founding President ; Lord Leverhulme delivered in Wirral and worldwide . It ' s a reminder of businesses ' capacity to make a difference locally , nationally and globally if they unlock their social value .
At our Annual Christmas Cheer event last month , we joined our members in reflecting on and celebrating 2022 . We shared stories of achievements and challenges ; it was a genuine pleasure to see our members come together with renewed optimism for 2023 following our presentation on the chamber ' s strategic plan for the next five years . We remain laser-focused on empowering our members to succeed ; whatever the economic challenges facing our community , Wirral Chamber will support you .
