It would be a very boring world if everybody liked the same new
cars and the same classic cars that visit Cars and Coffee Liverpool.
That’s why we seek out and nurture the odd, weird, wonderful and quirky, jalopnik
vehicles to mix things up a bit. But for some, even these more wacky vehicles
aren’t quite left field enough, in fact, often we prefer something completely out of
the park altogether. Could it be a Harley Davidson trike, a full blown race truck
or even a Sinclair C5 rolling with the scooter club?
I wish we could give all the cars a mention, but here are the 2 star cars we’ve chosen
this month. A beautifully preserved 1965 Mercedes 600 W100 Grosser (German for
big) is literally owned by a locally born TV star - Gary Mavers, who kindly brought
along an ultra luxury Federal black short wheel base limousine. Part of a line of
classic Mercedes that Mr Mavers has physically restored himself - yes, unknown
to many, Gary is a massive car enthusiast. He would restore vintage cars himself,
carrying out all welding, painting and mechanical engine rebuilds. Another multi
talented celebrity with a fascination with cars, similar to Steve McQueen, Paul
Newman, Patrick Dempsey and more. This Mercedes model was once the most
expensive car in the world, it’s almost 21ft long, weighs a shade over four tonnes, and
is powered by a 6.3-litre V8 so vast it could anchor a cruise ship. Such was its scale
that the little bonnet star that sits on top of the radiator surround had to be scaled up
by 20 per cent so it was proportionally correct.
This would have been the equivalent of its modern Maybach, chauffeuring dictators
and very powerful people in its day such as Chairman Mao, Leonid Brezhnev and
Kim Jong-il. Some were known to be bullet proof.
More of this car and the owner will be featured soon. The car is available for sale, if
you're interested email: [email protected].
On the subject of stars and the cars, remember the James Bond movie ‘For Your
Eyes Only’ directed by John Glen and ‘The Spy Who Loved me’ directed by Lewis
Gilbert. What star car was in both movies? A submarine British car to drive out of
the water onto the beach of Sardinia? It was a 1977 Lotus Esprit S1 in white and the
latter movie a copper coloured Esprit Turbo with the rear louvres and ski rack. Well,
a similar car came to Cars and Coffee Liverpool on this occasion, except in very cool
Ice Blue metallic with silver leather interior. This 1983 Lotus Esprit Turbo is owned
by a fellow collector Cliff Graham, who used to own one exactly the same colour
35 years ago! Remember in previous issues we talked about grown boys and their
nostalgia?
For all of us grown up kids, the memories of the poster car and the Lotus Esprit
turbo was one on the Supercar wish list. I’m sure we’ve touched upon the great Italian
designers to come out of Turin. Giugiaro designed this aerodynamic wedge car. The
oversized bubble tyres and enhanced bodykit styling showed they meant business
with the European competitors. You could say the whole thing looked bigger, bolder
and angrier. But let down by the quiet sounds of a four-cylinder, 2.2-litre engine with
210bhp, 0-60 around 6 seconds and top speed of 155mph on a 1,220kg.
The chosen charity for this month was Marie Curie, which cares and supports the
terminally ill. It was nominated by our neighbour business - Consortia. We raised
£301.39! Next time come and join in with the conversation, meet new friends, bring
the children, wives, partners, even pets and make a day of it.
A big thanks to all our motoring members, amazing friends and supporters, the
