MASTER THOSE GREEN SIDE BUNKERS
BY TOM ATKINSON, PGA GOLF PROFESSIONAL
For many a golfer I’ve played with, and thousands that I haven’t,
bunkers are their worst nightmare. When they hear that a pro
would rather be in one than next to one, their heads shake in
disbelief! It’s true, once you know how, the bunker is no longer a
hazard.
This article focuses on the greenside bunker shot where a delicate
‘splash out’ is required.
THE SETUP
75% of people don’t know it but their poor setup is their main downfall.
This shot requires total trust in the sand wedge and its capabilities. In
previous editions, we’ve talked about the importance of the bounce of
the club - in a bunker, using it is essential.
THE SWING
You will see some really long wristy swings when you watch the pro's
on television - don’t forget that these are the most skilful players on
earth and have mastered the art of controlling the low point. Some
wrist action is necessary but don’t make that swing too complicated.
A stiffer brisk action can be just as effective. Try and create a U shape
swing rather than a V as this will give the shallow angle of attack you
need. You can open up the clubface a little but don't go overboard.
Here’s the real tip though, make sure you hit the sand, allow the
bounce to cut through the sand and watch as that ball explodes softly
on to the green.
Place the ball at the front of your stance and keep your spine vertical.
Far too many get lured into leaning back assuming that this will create
the loft that is needed to clear that lip! Not the case, weight forward,
ball forward and a nice wide stable base, you can open your stance to
the line of flight if you wish, many will prefer to stand square on. See
which one suits you best.
Finally until you become accomplished don’t mess too much with the
amount of sand you take. Aim for consistency and go for 1-2 inches
before the ball with all your shots. If you need to alter the distance the
ball needs to fly, try changing between your wedges.
