W L SIX MOST COMMON BEAUTY QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Ever wondered how to get rid of acne or large pores? Time to put an end to all of your common beauty questions as Dr Sally Ann Dolan of SDS Rejuvenate shares with us her answers.
I have crepey skin on my chest and around my neck. What can I do? Crepey skin on the chest( décolletage), neck and back of hands is a common problem that I often get asked about. Despite using various, often expensive, skin creams, there is no improvement. Crepey skin is a result of dehydration and loss of collagen and elastin( inevitable as we age). To address this, there are non surgical treatments such as Volite which is an injectable gel and has made the headlines in all the beauty magazines lately. Volite does what it says – it improves the skin’ s smoothness and enhances hydration and elasticity for up to six to nine months with just one treatment. You can also further enhance the result with skin tightening using radio frequency. We advise six to eight treatments on a weekly basis. The results are outstanding and long lasting.
I have large pores, which get blocked. I’ ve tried all sorts of creams – They are really unsightly, is there anything to improve them? Pores are more evident when they are dilated, clogged with oil or infected. They are also more prevalent in those who have had excessive sun exposure. You can certainly improve the appearance of these pores by simply reviewing your skincare regime, cleanse, exfoliate and stimulate. It is vital to cleanse the skin, removing the excess oil and debris. For this you require a cleanser with glycolic acid or lactic acid and antioxidants – these ingredients loosen the dirt and oil from the pores and stimulate cell turnover. I recommend, from our SDS Skincare range, Prepare Cleanser with glycolic acid. Exfoliation also improves the texture of the skin. Exfoliating creams are a good start but really an in-clinic treatment is most efficient and I would advise Dermaplaning( superior to micro dermabrasion). I recommend using SDS Rejuvenate Glow at home, which contains Glycolic acid and quartz for luxury exfoliation and does not contain micro-beads. We also need to stimulate cell turnover and you can do this by incorporating Retinol into your night time skin regime. We advise using Recover( 0.5 % retinol) night cream, then upgrading to the stronger R +( retinol 1 %), not forgetting SPF once you’ ve used this! Any larger deeper pores will benefit from a course of skin peels or resurfacers. These need not be feared – a peel does not necessarily mean your“ face falls off”. Yes we can do this if you have the downtime but with a course of resurfacers or gentle peels we can obtain the same desired outcome with very little or no downtime. If pores are very deep and we do not consider any of the above will be appropriate, we still have the non-ablative laser skin resurfacing.
I am only just 30 and have horizontal lines across my forehead- I am apprehensive about having Botox and worried about side effects. Botulinum Toxin A commonly known as Botox, has been used to treat forehead lines for more than two decades with a very high safety profile. Worldwide it is one of the commonest treatments performed – many millions each year! You may get a bruise, this is unusual and should be tiny and short lived, and a small percentage of patients describe a Botox headache( surprising as Botulinum Toxin A is used to treat migraine – larger doses usually required). The risk of having a“ droopy eyelid” or“ dropped eyebrow” is also rare and this can be avoided if you go to a fully qualified injector. Always check out their qualifications and ensure you ask any questions or air your concerns at the consultation prior to agreeing to go ahead with the procedure. An experienced injector is key to a successful treatment.
I have lots of veins on my cheeks and nose – Is there anything I can do to get rid of them? Thread veins are tiny vessels which run close to the surface of the skin often developing on the cheeks and bridge of the nose. They are often very hard to disguise, even make up does not really help. These veins, often referred to as‘ spider veins’ can easily be treated. Laser treatment is the most efficient way – this uses brief pulses of laser light which destroys the small blood vessels. It should not be painful – people often describe it as a‘ rubber band’ pinging against the skin. Immediately after treatment you will look slightly pink, but this is short lived. If you seek help when you first notice them you will save yourself time and money. However, if you have had your veins a long time, don’ t worry, this is not a problem but you might need 3 or more treatment sessions. Thread veins can also be a problem on the legs and cause embarrassment in that people will not wear a skirt or shorts. These veins can similarly be treated. It is probably a good time to start treatment now and be ready to bare your legs for the summer – it’ s not that far away now! Prior to embarking on laser treatment you will require a patch test. This can be incorporated into your consultation both of which are free of charge.
I am a real gym bunny and really toned up, but I’ ve got pockets of fat I cannot budge despite diet and exercise. Help! 3D-Cryo freeze is the answer. This is a unique non invasive treatment using a combination of electro and cryotherapy. It is perfect for targeting those stubborn areas that just won’ t shift, including lower abdomen, inner thighs and muffin tops. On average, just with one treatment you see a 20 % to 40 % reduction of fat in the localised area, evident within 6 to 12 weeks. This is a pain free treatment that takes approximately 1 hour and there is no downtime. Book now to be body fit for the summer!
I have struggled with acne and nothing seems to really help. I ' ve tried all sorts of treatments including medication from my Doctor. Is there anything else I can do? Skincare should not be underestimated and it is essential that appropriate products are used. It is important that acne prone skin is cleansed appropriately. Your skin then requires exfoliation and products to encourage cell renewal. For this we use creams that include salicylic acid, glycolic acid and retinol. These ingredients are present in many skin care ranges available from aesthetic clinics and surprisingly do not necessarily cost anymore than creams purchased on the high street. In clinic, treatments accelerate and enhance results and these include mechanical exfoliation, e. g. Dermaplaning or chemical skin peels together with LED phototherapy. The LED treatment is a break through in treating acne as it is a non invasive, relaxing and it works. It obliterates the bacteria that causes the pustules and papules associated with acne. Make-up is another concern. How many times are you desperate to cover up your skin that you use heavy foundation? This simply encourages the bacteria to multiply and your spots simply gets worse. You can use concealer, primer and foundation but it has to be 100 % mineral and for this we advocate Young Blood makeup. Treating acne can be so rewarding, not only for us in the clinic but life changing for our patients as their confidence and self esteem is renewed. Don ' t suffer, seek help and in doing so not only can we improve your skin but more importantly prevent development of scarring.
