ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS …
Martyn Best , our Tranmere Rovers inside man asks …
What ’ s your favourite " All I want for Christmas " song ? For many it ’ s that endearing Mariah Carey song – remember the one with her dancing in the snow in that distinctive Santa suit ?
For others closer to home , and of a certain age , it may be that unusual twist of a song for which our home-spun Wirral heroes Half Man Half Biscuit are noted , “ All I want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit .”
Yes , dear younger readers there truly is a song of that title , and as one reminisces at this time of the year , we can recall 1986 and the cult Birkenhead punk-folk band releasing that song as an insightful study of adolescent rivalry and , err , table football .
The band had a rare way with words and of providing curious perspectives and insights into strange corners of our existence – and , here ’ s the connection for this article , they were intensely bonkers Tranmere Rovers Fans . Bonkers to the extent that they famously turned down Top of the Pops as there was a game on at Prenton Park at the same time , and they would coincide their concerts to match Tranmere away games .
And so to a suggestion to your new favourite Christmas song , inspired by the above , “ All I want for Christmas is a Tranmere Rovers away shirt .”
To celebrate Christmas in their own lottery style , the club , are having a special Christmas draw at the next home game against Leyton Orient on Saturday 18th December – and partly inspired by Birkenhead ’ s glorious band they are having a few extra special prizes , including their own famous away kit .
In addition to the normal guaranteed £ 100 prize and a year ’ s lottery tickets they will also have guaranteed winners of a home shirt , the away shirt and the now much sought after , clearly Dukla Prague inspired yellow third shirt .
But wait – the Christmas excitement grows as they will also have 5 pairs of tickets for a home League 2 game this season . So , if you ’ ve not yet bought your Boxing Day tickets , buy a lottery ticket and see if you can win tickets for that game – or another one of your choice this season .
Tranmere Chairman , Mark Palios , in fine festive spirit was delighted with even more guaranteed prizes said : “ Our MORE THAN A LOTTERY has been a great success this season , and at this time of year , thanks to the deep support of our fans we are able to add even more valuable funds to our SUPER WHITE CHRISTMAS campaign .
“ I really want to thank everyone who has bought a lottery ticket , and these extra prizes are one small way of saying thank you and giving you a greater chance of winning one of these prizes .
“ The big Christmas draw will be at our Leyton Orient home league game , and I hope you will all enter , and my very best wishes to you all in choosing the right numbers .”
