WL FOOD & DRINK KARMA - WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND Wirral Life talk to Indian restaurant, Karma, based in West Kirby. In 1955 Dada-bai set out on his adventure to bring his beloved Bangladeshi cuisine to England. He fell in love with the Wirral in particular so, with his wife, Dadu-Muni, set up one of the peninsula’s first Indian restaurants. The couple had a deep passion for honest, tasty food and set about building a series of restaurants to realise their vision. Dadu-Muni is known for being the first female Bengali chef on the Wirral over 50 years ago. Fast forward two generations to modern day West Kirby and we have one of the most innovative & exciting Indian restaurants on the Wirral. Babul & Hussain are carrying on their grandparent’s vision but with their own unique and modern twist. Karma has long been established as one of the best restaurant’s on the peninsula but after this year’s rebrand we caught up with the brothers to find out more about this evolution. Babul said “Karma is well known & has been serving the same great food for many years in the same surroundings. We wanted to shake things up, to give both the dishes and the setting a more distinctive character." Hussain continued: "The rebrand allowed us to reflect our personalities, love of Indian food and add our own unique interpretation.” 40 wirrallife.com The restaurant itself looks beautiful & very modern, but it is on the table where the biggest delights are revealed. Their food is incredibly well balanced with gorgeous, fresh tastes. Herbs & spices subtly add depth & flavour to the dishes, some building beautiful heat. This is a world away from traditional chicken in a hot curry gravy. It is testament to the brothers that some of their original dishes are still top favourites; for example Jalmeeta is one of the most popular orders with regulars, despite not actually being on the menu! Babul said “We’ve listened to our frequent diners and will be bringing some of the treasured dishes back soon”. In line with their modernisation, they have updated their website to allow booking online, which will be followed by an ordering system for their increasingly popular take-away. Hussain added “Our take-away service has grown in popularity so much over this year, that we will be optimising the finest dishes in our repertoire specifically for a delivery service in the New Year.” Karma is now taking bookings for the Christmas period, so it’s time to come around: book at: www.karmaindianfood.com or call 0151 625 5999.
