With its mixture of Victorian villas, its famous Secret Gardens, small local shops, a wide variety of wine bars, pubs, restaurants and a 130-year old Club complete with bowling green, the village is a small, thriving and proud community. "We started with the idea of just a simple bakery selling bread" explained Kirsten, "but it soon became obvious that there were other things which could be added to the menu. So we included unusual loaves such as Roasted Onion and Spelt Beetroot, then salad boxes and some popular French, Italian and American style food lines too. To top all this off we also offer a variety of teas and coffees, milkshakes and real ice cream." This week saw the opening of a new addition to village life - Bon Bakery - and early indications are that this artisan style retail outlet is going to be a great success. The brainchild of local business couple Paul and Kirsten Edwards, Bon Bakery offers a wide range of baked goods to suit all tastes, including at least nine varieties of fresh bread loaves. A range of delicious pastries, sandwiches and baguettes topped off with more exotic items such as pizzas, panini's and American style hot dogs all add up to a recipe for Paul and Kirsten. "We wanted something different and unique" explained Paul, who also owns the village newsagents. "Kirsten and I talked it through over a long period of time until we came 40 wirrallife.com Traditional breakfasts are available and these can be eaten in or taken away. A selection of newspapers is available for those who want to linger over their morning coffee or afternoon tea and in a nod to modern technology USB charger points are dotted around the store. A phone-in takeaway service is also on hand for busy Oxton residents. "Initial sales have been good" says Paul and Kirsten. "We have been sampling lines and encouraging customers to let us have their opinions and their suggestions for any additions to the range. Because at the end of the day - the customer is King."
