OXTON VILLAGE GETS
ITS OWN BAKERY
Set in the heart of the town, Oxton Village is a quiet oasis
in an otherwise busy Birkenhead. up with what we hope is a range of food products which
we believe balances both the traditional and the modern."
With its mixture of Victorian villas, its famous Secret
Gardens, small local shops, a wide variety of wine bars,
pubs, restaurants and a 130-year old Club complete with
bowling green, the village is a small, thriving and proud
community. "We started with the idea of just a simple bakery selling
bread" explained Kirsten, "but it soon became obvious that
there were other things which could be added to the menu.
So we included unusual loaves such as Roasted Onion and
Spelt Beetroot, then salad boxes and some popular French,
Italian and American style food lines too. To top all this off
we also offer a variety of teas and coffees, milkshakes and
real ice cream."
This week saw the opening of a new addition to village life -
Bon Bakery - and early indications are that this artisan style
retail outlet is going to be a great success.
The brainchild of local business couple Paul and Kirsten
Edwards, Bon Bakery offers a wide range of baked goods
to suit all tastes, including at least nine varieties of fresh
bread loaves. A range of delicious pastries, sandwiches and
baguettes topped off with more exotic items such as pizzas,
panini's and American style hot dogs all add up to a recipe
for Paul and Kirsten.
"We wanted something different and unique" explained
Paul, who also owns the village newsagents. "Kirsten and I
talked it through over a long period of time until we came

Traditional breakfasts are available and these can be eaten
in or taken away. A selection of newspapers is available
for those who want to linger over their morning coffee
or afternoon tea and in a nod to modern technology USB
charger points are dotted around the store. A phone-in
takeaway service is also on hand for busy Oxton residents.
"Initial sales have been good" says Paul and Kirsten. "We
have been sampling lines and encouraging customers to
let us have their opinions and their suggestions for any
additions to the range. Because at the end of the day - the
customer is King."
