July’s Car and Coffee Liverpool meeting gave a warm welcome to the new
Liverpool Lord Mayor Cllr Malcolm Kennedy and Mayoress Liliana Herescu.
Have you ever seen the Del Monte Orange juice advert in the 90’s where the
man visits the village orange fields and samples an orange good enough for his
drinks? It was similar pause and silence from the Liverpool Mayor and Mayoress
whilst taking their first bite of Chung Ku’s steamed doughy sweet honey roast
‘char sui’ pork buns. The answer was YES! The Mayoress who said one just wasn’t
enough.
The newcomers especially our distinguish guests saw how special and unique
this car meeting was for the motor enthusiasts and non interested spectators.
This month the Liverpool C&CL crew collaborated with the Arts from the Baltic
Social. A well respected artist and friend Ken Bullock (whom you will probably
know Sign written ‘Camp in Furnace’ and the ‘Bluecoat’. Ken thought it was
a great idea to introduction to Joe McCarty a great illustrator and a car lover
created and just published a beautifully illustrated book called the ‘Alphabet
of Curious Cars’. Joe kindly accepted our invitation to the meeting and book
signing on the day, with generous sales and proceeds donated to the chosen
charity. It features retro, classic cars ranging from A for Allegro to Z for Zagota
which educates the new generate of children who loves cars. An excuse for the
father or wives to buy for the children if not the big kid in the family!
The top trump card of July’s meeting was Paul Whittle’s super clean black 1959
Ford Pop with a 68 Ford Torino 5ltr V8 C4 3 speed auto transmission. The Ford
Pop was know properly as the Ford Popular built in England between 1953 and
1962. When launched, it was the lowest priced car. Well, it’s certainly not the
lowest priced car now after a huge increase in classic car prices. Parked behind the
Pop was another top draw Classic, a 1962 racing Lotus inspired and outstanding
build specification Ford Anglia. Running a genuine Lotus Twin Cam, 4 speed,
twin 45 Webers on a lightweight body. Owned by Tom Owen’s father - John
Owen. We can definitely tell you the whole family have petrol running in their
veins!! Check out Tom’s Mk1 VW Jetta at the next coming meeting.
On the opposite end of the spectrum was the spectacular yellow Lamborghini
Huracan Performante - just launched, only 2 in the North West. Thanks to David
G from HR Owen for the great support every month. The Liverpool Lord Mayor’s
favourite and most memorable car is a very elegant burgundy 1966 Mercedes
230 SL. The owners quote was “It’s a real granny Magnet”.
