IN BRIEF
WSDC AND THE WIRRAL HARLEY DAVIDSON CLUB HELP MAKE DEREK ' S DREAMS COME TRUE
BE INSPIRED – AN EXCITING NEW COMMUNITY COURSE FOR YEAR 5 & 6 CHILDREN
It was another busy month for Andy Poynton and his admin team at Wirral Support During Coronavirus ( WSDC ).
One very special elderly gentleman , Derek , received the best birthday present ever . WSDC were contacted by Derek ' s granddaughter who explained that although he suffers with dementia he still enjoys chatting about his motorcycle days . She asked if WSDC knew of any member with a classic bike that could visit him for a chat .
Not a group that does anything by halves , Andy put a request out to his 11,500 members and within minutes had arranged a small crew from the Wirral Harley Davidson club to visit him on the morning of his birthday . Derek was absolutely delighted and was even made an honorary member of The Wirral Harley Davidson club .
WSDC is a Facebook group created by Andy Poynton in March 2020 to assist the community during the Covid pandemic . It has continued to expand and has grown to an amazing community group of nearly 11,500 devoted members and an incredible group of admins .
The WSDC continues to achieve what many would consider unachievable projects ranging from providing emergency food supplies to coming to the assistance of Wirral families involved in house fires and providing much needed support to those who have been in lockdown for the best part of a year .
The group has worked alongside other major charities to become a central go to place during these difficult months . They have brought so much hope and joy throughout the borough and they are frequently described as “ Wirral ’ s safety net ”.
If you would like to join this major Wirral community movement check them out on Facebook , your faith in humanity will be immediately restored .
Birkenhead School has launched a new and exciting community course for children in Years 5 and 6 at local state primary schools to help them prepare for secondary school regardless of their destination for secondary education . The programme launches at a time when preparing young children could not be more critical given the recent lockdowns . ‘ Be Inspired ’ will run over a 6 week period between May and June and local schools and parents are invited to nominate children who will be invited to attend one or more of the weekly sessions .
The children selected will be exposed to new subjects and activities , as well as building on the national curriculum with engaging , creative lessons supplementing the work done in their Primary Schools . Sessions range from ‘ You Want to Be an Astronaut ’, combining Chemistry and Astronomy to Rock Music sessions and sports using the school ’ s sporting facilities .
The lessons will be led by teachers from Birkenhead School , supported by Sixth Form pupils , who will act as mentors for the younger children – academically , as well as offering advice on aspiration , university and confidence . Support for the most disadvantaged students who may have suffered educationally as a result of lockdown will be provided with the support to ‘ catch-up ’ with their peers and be prepared for their secondary school journey .
