GOLF IS BACK
BY TOM ATKINSON , PGA GOLF PROFESSIONAL
We ' re back and hopefully this time , to stay ! I bet your first couple of games were about getting out and enjoying it , you went out with no expectations , not really caring much about your score , but then pretty soon , your competitive nature took over and you were asking yourself those questions , why am I slicing it , why can ' t I make birdie , why can ' t I play well ?
Let ' s break it down , you have a golf swing , and you ' ve had that swing since you started , I can tell who is down on the range from my pro shop 400 yards away purely by their swing . One of my favourite opening lines in a new lesson is " There ' s no right or wrong way to play golf " and that ' s the beauty .
Too many people who have the talent to burn go off on a mission to find golf ’ s holy grail , it doesn ' t exist , you just need to make your moves working consistently , learn to repeat them , not to rebuild them .
Like a lot of golfers , when I first started , I would always struggle playing with better players , “ hope I play well ”, “ hope I don ’ t embarrass myself ”. This type of mindset would cause me problems .
I ’ m lucky enough to have played with some of the world ' s best , Tommy Fleetwood , Jamie Donaldson , Lee Slattery to name a few and there is no evidence of these thoughts in their games . These players know their swing , they know their game and they go out and trust it .
Don ’ t get me wrong , they work hard and have coaching but mainly just to build a more consistent , more repeatable game . You may have watched the masters , and heard them talk about Scotland ’ s Robert McIntrye and of how he is confident but not arrogant . This is the perfect mix for golf .
So what information am I giving you in this article ? No secret swing fixes , no magical potions for better chipping , just some good solid advice on being yourselves out there . Finding what works for you and then concentrating on making whatever it is work consistently .
