MRES IN WOMENS SEXUAL HEALTH by Lucy Tomkinson Research based , consists of 3 projects which are supposed to be lab projects ( our first semester project is a systematic review due to covid ). I picked it as a last minute choice wanting to do something in women ’ s health in Liverpool and not much else was available , it seemed like a good option as at the time I was unsure whether I was interested in research so it would be a good way to find out whilst also gaining a masters ! PROS : It gives you skills in things you wouldn ’ t do in medicine & you may be able to do research in something you ’ re interested in CONS : it ’ s really really hard , not a course to pick if you ’ re looking for an easier year , some supervisors are really unhelpful which makes it 10x more difficult , no clinical time so going back into 4th year may be tough There can be a lot of write up of projects which can take time TOP TIP : Important especially as it ’ s a masters is to make sure you make time for other things that you enjoy as its such an
intense course the workload can get you down sometimes and overwhelm you HUMANITARIAN STUDIES - LSTM by Sevim Zaim I am studying humanitarian studies at LSTM . The course mainly revolves around analysing different aspects of humanitarian interventions and casestudies . We also have a module on research skills . I wanted to do something different for a year and experience a different approach to learning . I am also interested in working in the humanitarian field in the future . PROS : The content is really interesting and enlightening . It gives you an in-depth perspective on humanitarianism . CONS : It is a very different way of learning and a different approach to assessment , so the workload can seem a bit daunting at first . TOP TIP : Try to familiarise yourself with the key concepts in the
INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH AT LSTM
By Rosie Hutchinson Public health is so important and so topical . PROS : Full of many interesting people from different backgrounds and great way to develop essay writing skills CONS : Intense workload TOP TIP : LSTM hold an open day which is really worthwhile to attend if you ' re considering intercalation there !
INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH IN LSTM By Dhikshitha Gokulakrishnan I ’ ve always had an interest in public health and one day hope to work in a healthcare NGO or take the public health training pathway . PROS : LSHTM is a world class facility and has amazing research opportunities CONS : The work load of a masters can take a toll on people and you have to be prepared TOP TIP : Don ’ t be put off by the experience requirements for the courses . If you are able to tie in placement experience and extra-curricular activities you still have a very good chance of getting in
PRE HOSPITAL MEDICINE AT QUEEN MARY by Maggie Franklin and Anna Horrocks Picked due to a real interest in emergency / acute medicine and medicine in the non hospital environment ( also helicopters !)
PROS : Mix of both theory and clinical , works on reflective skills , small cohort to meet interesting new people CONS : COVID TOP TIPS : Have a genuine interest and really show that in you application , especially what you ' ve learnt from any experiences you ' ve had in related areas and how this has made you a better clinician .
GLOBAL HEALTH AT MANCHESTER by Maeve Colquhoun I wanted to do a course that related to working abroad in the future and humanitarianism , and wanted to try another city . PROS : a 1 year course specially for intercalating medics so not having to cram 3 years into 1 , but also get to be with anthropology students and meet new people . Really relevant in current situation , and the course has been updated so we are learning about corona responses and what ’ s going on in the world at the moment . CONS : However , living and learning about pandemics is a bit much sometimes TOP TIP : Get you application done early so you ’ re not worrying about it , and also don ’ t stress if they don ’ t get back to you for ages
MRES - GASTROENTEROLOGY by Reuben Veysey-Smith I liked doing RS in lower years and I wanted to develop my research skills and do some useful work in a subject that I enjoy . PROS : A very broad course with many research options , you can experience labs which is a great skill and theres opportunities to get published . CONS : It ’ s a research masters which means no lectures so it ’ s very self directed , sometimes due to it being new techniques you will make mistakes you don ’ t have the answers for There can be a lot of write up of projects which can take time TOP TIP 1 : There ’ s a NWCR bursary you can apply for if you choose to do your projects in cancer related topics . This will pay for your fees and give you £ 2,000 living expenses if successful . TOP TIP 2 : When applying look up the research strand interests you and email the professors to see what they have on offer .
They ' re really friendly and will be keen to have a chat to you !
Tropical Disease Biology Msc by Robert Gittings I ' m learning about the main infectious diseases which affect much of the poorer regions of the world , how we can control them , and how we research them . PROS : High quality teaching , lab access , learn about schistosomiasis and malaria in detail CONS : steep learning curve , more exams ( one at the end of every module ), need a strong stomach especially when analysing parasitic worms TOP TIP : Try and make friends on the course early on , and see if you can form a study group so you can quiz each other on the new concepts
REPRODUCTIVE AND DEVELOPMENTAL MSC by Lucy Nove This course is 50 % taught and 50 % research project and is based in Sheffield . I chose it as I have an interest in O & G , particularly the infertility side of things , so the more in-depth cellular knowledge should ( hopefully ) help me out ! PROS : hands on lab experience , small cohort so get to know them , people from all different undergrads and unis , great staff who want to help . CONS : clearly pitched at biomed grads and it all goes right over your head , not too many other intercalaters but enough that you don ’ t feel 100 % on your own . TOP TIP : Be honest with yourself when applying and put these down as the reasons for applying .
URGENT AND EMERGENCY MEDICINE COURSE by Charlotte Carroll I wasn ' t interested in research and I wanted to still be on placement with us intercalating after 3rd year and having finals in 4th year . I have an interest in Emergency Medicine , so wanted to explore that , and I wanted to increase my clinical skills and my confidence . PROS : My clinical skills are developing a lot and I ' m feeling so much more confident . CONS : Maybe not having a break from placement ( I still feel like I ' m doing medicine TOP TIP : For the interview go over the A-E assessment and the approach to the acutely ill patient as there will likely be a scenario station in the interview
