A New Year always brings reflection with the idea of hope and change. We are entering 2022 after two years of uncharted territory with challenges in education. It seems like getting into the flow of teaching is constantly being interrupted by events that are out of our control. Learning how to adapt to the changing times is a critical aspect as we move forward. As educators, we should constantly be observing and reflecting on the effects of our practices. Teaching and learning are dynamic in nature as well as the children who enter our classrooms each day.

One way educators navigate the ever-changing landscape is by being proactive in advocating for the literacy practices that meet their students’ individual needs. Joining other educators through local, state, and national organizations create opportunities to connect research and practice making literacy accessible for all students.

The Missouri Literacy Association, an affiliate of The International Literacy, is continuing to grow by connecting educators across the state. We have three regional chapters, St. Louis, Kansas City, and Southwest. When you become a member of MLA, you automatically become a member of your local chapter at no extra cost.  You will not want to miss the professional learning opportunities from national speakers this year. Information will be available on our website:

As we move forward in our journey with the inspiration to empower ourselves to create equitable literacy environments for our students, take a moment to read this issue of The Missouri Reader. Set your goals high and embrace the anticipation of where a new year will lead you.

Sincerely,

Debbie Lambeth
