Moosehead Region Winter Guide
Ice anglers drill into the lake with an ice auger- a tool with a sharp, rotating blade, to drill through the thick ice covering the lake.
This process creates a hole, typically 6-12 inches in diameter, allowing access to the water beneath.
Anglers commonly use tip-ups baited with live or dead fish like smelt and minnows, strategically placed to entice strikes from species like lake trout and salmon.
Alternatively, they actively jig lures, sometimes enhanced with a piece of live or dead bait, to attract fish through enticing vertical movements.
