Mount Kineo
Mount Kineo is a striking geological and cultural landmark. It stands proudly on the eastern shore of Moosehead Lake in central Maine. Rising to a height of 1,790 feet, it offers breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding wilderness. Mount Kineo has been a revered cultural site for the Penobscot and other Wabanaki peoples for centuries. They valued the area ' s rich resources, including the stone used for tools.
Today, Mount Kineo is part of the 4,000- acre Moosehead Lake State Park and is easily accessible to visitors. The park offers a variety of recreational activities, from hiking to fishing. The mountain can be reached via a ferry from the mainland in the summer or via snowmobile in the winter. The summit hike to Mount Kineo is a challenging 2.5-mile trail with a steep ascent, gaining 1,000 feet in elevation. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the top, where hikers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Moosehead Lake and the surrounding wilderness.
