In honor of Grandparents Day, we asked some of the
staff to submit their fondest memory or share words of
wisdom they received from their grandparent(s). Here
is how they responded.
Cruz Castillo – Editor-in-Chief
“Stop eating with your eyes unless you’re getting full.”
“Leave everything you touch better than you found it.”
“Si lo que vez en el espejo te agrada no cambies nada,
pero si te Asusta, tu vida ajusta.”
Julie Prows-Connell – Office Manager
I cherish memories of visiting Grandma and Grandpa
Prows on their farm in Tennessee. I am proud of my Irish
heritage I received from Grandpa Daugherty. I loved
feeding the ducks with Grandma Fulkerson.
Janell Chambers – Editor
“If a man doesn’t love or treat his mother right, there’s
no way he can love or treat you right.”
“If you take care of God’s business, He’ll take care of
yours.”
“Love is what it does, it’s an action word.”
“Business does not take care of itself, you must take
care of business.”
“As a leader, you should not send others where you are
not willing to go. Lead by example.”
Although I miss you, I am thankful for the life and example you lived before me. Thank you. (R.I.P. Bishop R.
B. Hemingway – May 8, 1995 & Senior Mother Flora M.
Hemingway – August 30, 2014)
Ruben Santana, Jr. – Intern, Graphic Designer
“He who lacks ideas makes those of others his own.”
“The monkey knows the tree it climbs.”
“There’s a risk in every jump.”
Marquita Colbert – Communications Coordinator
About a year before my grandmother passed she lived
with my family. One night my parents went out on
“a date” and didn’t tell us they would be gone so
long. Well, my grandma got us together and helped
us plan how to get them back. When my parents got
home she attempted to scare them but fell down the
stairs! Even we were scared, but she laughed all the
way to the couch.

Michael Carter – Photographer
I remember my grandmother allowing my older
brother and me to assist her while she baked in the
kitchen. We would help in adding the ingredients,
mixing the batter and using a cup to cut out the
biscuits from the dough. I really enjoyed helping her
with preparing cakes because we got to lick the extra
batter off the beaters.
Summer McClanahan – Intern, Graphic
Designer
Considering that Cinderella’s castle is essentially situated in our backyards, and that many residents of
Winter Garden either work or play (or both) there on
a daily basis, a fond memory involving Walt Disney
World and a beloved grandparent might seem a bit
mundane. With that being said, my most sparkling
memory dates back to 1997 as two giddy kids, their
parents and their grandmother packed into a van to
embark on a twelve-hour journey to Central Florida
for the very first time. A kid’s first time experiencing
Disney World is going to be memorable on its own,
but the opportunity to be joined by my grandmother,
who hadn’t been herself since my father was much
younger, made it all the more special. I will always be
grateful for the quality time spent there with her, especially since years later, I am not fortunate enough
to see her as often. And who knew, five years later I’d
make the journey again, only this time to live.
