In recent years , the Howey Mansion was a popular destination for urban explorers , thrill seekers and the curious . The mansion was abandoned in 2009 , after thenowner Zona Marvel became too ill to reside there alone . Marvel , an heiress from Chicago , had purchased the property in 1984 . Through the years , she neglected to care for the large home and it slowly fell into disrepair .
