FARMERS MARKET FEATURED VENDOR:
T
Brett Dault
his month’s Featured Vendor of the Winter Garden
Farmers Market is the place for steampunk-inspired
jewelry, Clockwork Alley. We got a chance to chat
with Lorry Volkens, the owner and creator of these
pieces of art, to learn more about her and her craft.
Lorry has been making jewelry since she was a teenager,
but her style changed when she was given an old, handed-
down pocket watch. She opened up the back and was
amazed by the beauty of the Elgin movement inside.
The watch was unrepairable, so she decided to turn it
into a unique piece of jewelry. From there, she began
searching for old watches and parts, and loved the
idea of turning them into wearable pieces of art. With
that, her brand Clockwork Alley materialized, and can
now be found at markets and online in her Etsy shop.
What’s your experience been like at the
Winter Garden Farmer’s Market?
I love being a part of the Winter Garden Farmers Market.
After moving here from New Hampshire four years ago
– partly to pursue this full-time – I tried a few different
flea markets and small markets until some customers
recommended that I try to get into the Winter Garden
Farmers Market, saying how great I would do there.
Our first day was the weekend before Christmas, and
Clockwork Alley was a success right from the start.
I have been a vendor here for about 3 years now.
Lorry can also create custom items; pieces that have
meaning. The necklace she always wears is made from a
beautiful watch case which holds her dear sister’s ashes.
She added baby’s breath and a tiny bird, and sealed it
in resin. You can bring Lorry an old watch, and she
can make you something special that has meaning.
What’s been the most gratifying part of
making this business happen?
Turning my hobby into my full time job has been fantastic
and being my own boss is awesome! I get to hang out in
my home studio making jewelry while listening to music
or watching Star Trek and hanging out with my husband
