Deck the
Halls!
inter Garden resident Robert McCormick grew up
loving Christmas decorations, especially lights. He
W
was inspired by the festive glow and celebratory decor
and was often found sleeping curled up under his family’s
Christmas tree when he was a child.
When Robert first met his husband, Richard McKinney,
he asked if Richard liked Christmas as much as he did.
Richard was neither here nor there about it. Well, Bobby
knew Richard was about to learn...and after 32 years together,
they’ve amassed quite the collection.
Robert begins decorating for the holidays near the end of
October. He places beautifully appointed trees in all rooms
of their home, including each of the bedrooms. Beginning
at the top of the trees, Robert creates a unique overall theme
for each, and custom creates many of its embellishments.
The look carries down to the wrapped gifts beneath each
tree, as the ribbons and ornaments on the tree are identical
to those on the presents.
Lighted, decorated garland dress the bannister, tops
of armoires and cabinetry as well as the tabletops.
Richard decorates the outside of their home with
all kinds of lighting, paying special attention to
the tall palms. Between in and outdoors, around
10,000 lights glow throughout the holiday season.
Richard and Bobby, as they are fondly known
throughout the WG, have their decorations
completed in time for their annual Holiday Open
House. This afternoon-long event with nearly 200
guests stopping in throughout the day has become a staple
for friends, family, and the Winter Garden community.
With all the greeing and chatting with good friends and
new, the duo share their home and share fellowship
and the true spirit of giving.
