Rockin’ the Rockwellian
D
illard Street Elementary opened in
1951 in what was then known as “the
Cabbage Patch.” Opened in 1951, the school
was originally located on the corner of North
Dillard and West Tilden. The original school
included five one-story cinderblock, flatroofed buildings and held grades four through
six. As the area experienced continued
growth, the building was expanded several
times, and then instructed students ranging
from kindergarten through sixth grades.
In December 2003, the school closed and
moved to a new and larger facility across the
street to where it now sits at 311 N. Dillard
Street. The City of Winter Garden purchased
the old original building and reopened it in
2010 as the Jessie Brock Community Center,
named for long-time Winter Garden principal.
