I n 1936, led and inspired by Mrs. Phil C. Peters, twenty five members laid the foundation for the Winter Garden Welfare League. Much of the League’s work for the first years of its existence centered around the West Orange County Day Nursery. In the 70 years that have followed, the West Orange Junior Service League (WOJSL) has continued serving the community through various service projects and fund raising events. The West Orange Junior Service League is a dedicated and compassionate group of women who give their selves to benefit others by stewarding philanthropy. Today the League impact is throughout the West Orange Community. Their purpose and objective are: • To foster an interest among the membership in the social, economic, educational, cultural, and civic needs of the communities of West Orange County • To train and engage the membership for efficient service in any public work or activity that may be undertaken • To raise finances through activities of the members with funds to be used for charitable purposes and for the maintenance and furtherance of the work and purpose of the organization The organization strives to give the community assistance, comfort, companionship, friendship, education, funding and to some – a chance at a brighter future. The West Orange Junior Service League serves the community through various service projects and fund raising events. In 2013, WOJSL disbursed almost $40,000 to local West Orange charities and non-profits. 20  |  WINTER GARDEN MAGAZINE  |  APRIL 2015 2013 Funds Disbursement • Winter Garden Heritage Museum - $10,000 • WO Scholarship Committee - $3,700.00 • Roper YMCA - $5,000 • Edgewood Children’s Ranch - $7,500 • Oakland Nature Preserve - $1,000 • WO Scholarship Foundation - $2,500 • Christian Service Center - $4,500 • Orlando Health Foundation - $2,500 • Reading Reindeer - $1,500 • Garden Theatre - $1,300 • Magnolia School - $770 Total Donations - $39,770.00 In addition, the WOJSL awards four $1500 scholarships directly to local students attending Valencia College.
