UPDATE ON GLENVIEW PARK DISTRICT
REFERENDUM INITIATIVES
ICE CENTER RENOVATION THE GROVE IMPROVEMENTS
Big changes continue to shape the new Glenview Community
Ice Center. This fall saw much progress outside the building.
In the parking lot, curbs were laid out, light pole bases were
set and underground electrical systems for site lighting were
installed. The saw cut was completed for the curb cut onto Hos-
pital Drive. This will facilitate the new parking lot entry and exit. THE GROVE ENTRANCE
Another big accomplishment was the installation of the Storm
Trap Detention System underneath the parking lot that is
shared with the neighboring fire station. It is one of the largest
storm traps our construction team has ever seen and was
made possible thanks to a land swap agreement with the Vil-
lage of Glenview. The partnership has resulted in costs savings
for both government entities due to the sharing of storm water
management at the site.
With regard to the building itself, foundation work for the studio
rink is underway. Concrete footings, which will support the foun-
dation and prevent settling, were poured. We also poured the
concrete base to set up both ice melting pits, and concrete slabs
for the mechanical room and the team rooms were poured.
We received a certificate of appropriateness from The Village
of Glenview Appearance Commission for site lighting, land-
scaping and the monument sign. The Illinois Environmental
Protection Agency issued a sanitary permit which allows the
site sanitary sewer to be replaced and to discharge into an
existing sanitary sewer tributary.
Com Ed delivered our new transformer this fall and NICOR in-
stalled new gas service. Concrete masonry unit (CMU) work to
enclose the existing Rink B is nearly finished. Interior masonry
work for the new locker rooms and hallway continues.
For those of you who have driven by the rink in the past few
weeks or been following our posts, you’ve definitely noticed
the continued steel beam work on the northwest corner of
the structure. These beams will provide the framework for the
grand hall, reception desk, skate sharpening area and pro shop.
The construction team also started on the main corridor of the
building. Foundation and piers were poured for the grand hall
and lobby.
The project to give The Grove’s front entrance a more vibrant
look and enhance safety is nearing completion. A right turn
lane off Milwaukee Ave., and a left turn lane out of The Grove
are being added, along with a new pedestrian walkway. Fol-
lowing sewer pipe installation and excavation of the wetlands
detention area, more than 30 native trees, many grown at the
Park District’s own nursery, have been planted. Native seeding
and new shrubs are also part of the project.
INTERPRETIVE CENTER
It has been a productive season as we watched wall framing
and finishes go up on two first floor offices and general fixtures
be placed throughout the building. There is now a new sump
pit system and water heater, as well as glulam support beams
and columns.
Rough-in plumbing was finished in the men’s and women’s
restrooms on the first floor. Plumbing has been a big focus this
season, along with other vital infrastructure. That includes the
mechanical, electrical and heating systems, as well as the new
fire sprinkler system.
THE GROVE EXHIBITS
Turtle Island, the new Interpretive Center habitat for our
turtles, snakes and alligator snapping turtle, arrived safety
from our exhibit builder in Arizona. We will soon be acclimat-
ing these animals to their new home. A larger fish tank along
the interior wall is replacing several smaller tanks that were on
the verge of failing. A custom-made insert for the tank features
natural-looking rock outcroppings and logs.
We are putting the finishing touches on new interactive exhib-
its, including one where children can explore items similar to
what Robert Kennicott collected as a naturalist.
