A look back at the West End Produce Auction

WEST , from P . 19 Parkhurst , president ; H . J . Monfort , J . E . Holman , Edwin Adams , Harry Taylor , Laton M . Parkhurst and William Colwell , directors . P . J . Brown and A . J . King were named auditors . This organization operated until 1919 .
“ For several years after 1919 the farmers brought their goods to 12th Street and the railroad station to sell to any buyer who offered the best price . This led to considerable confusion on the street and town council took action in 1927 to open a municipal market on West End Avenue , at the same time forbidding future selling in the 12th Street Section .
“ The creation of a municipal market brought on the formation of a new cooperative movement in 1927 known as the Hammonton Municipal Market which continued until 1931 when the name was changed to the Hammonton Cooperative Peach Auction . William Slack directed activities of the market from 1931 to 1946 when he was succeeded by Harold Yehl who was still the market master in 1966 , when The Story of Hammonton was printed . Yehl had been connected with the auction since 1942 .
“ The Hammonton Cooperative Peach Auction became the Hammonton Fruit Auction Association , Inc . in 1934 and continued operation supervised by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture . However , it had its own officers . The auction was located on West End Avenue between Pleasant Street and 13th Street , a site designated by town council in 1927 as the only place within town limits where farmers can sell their produce at auction . On producing farmers could be members of the association .
“ Through the years , many kinds of fruit were sold at the auction , such as strawberries , raspberries , blackberries , peaches and blueberries . As of 1966 , the greater part of the market activities centered around the strawberry and blueberry crops . The auction also supplied storage for sweet potatoes and a freezer for blueberries ,” McMahon wrote in The Story of Hammonton .
