With respect to Civil Procedure , I have experience as a civil litigator working with the Wyoming Attorney General ’ s Office , at Crowley Fleck , and in my solo practice , in areas such as complex commercial , energy , and natural resource , probate litigation , and other civil matters . In my bar prep course at Washburn , I reviewed civil procedure , which my students said was a really tough class in their first year . For me , civil procedure didn ’ t make sense until I started practicing . Therefore , at UND I teach this course so it is more understandable , accessible , and enjoyable for our students .
Why are you excited about joining UND School of Law and living in Grand Forks ?
I appreciate the character of the student body , collegial environment , smaller faculty , and ability to make a difference in the legal profession . At UND School of Law , everyone has been very collegial , respectful , and supportive . I have been impressed with the level of support for my participation in conferences , research assistants , and the mentoring programs for new faculty at the law school and university . I am particularly excited to teach Civil Procedure , Law Practice Management , Cybersecurity , and Law and Technology . I am drawn to our law school ’ s focus on practical legal education and teaching attorneys who will return to their hometowns and be effective in helping real people with real problems . This fall , a group of law students started a new Agricultural Law Association , and I was thrilled they asked me to serve as the faculty advisor . I am happy to have received such a warm welcome from students , colleagues , administrators , and local practitioners , such as through our local Inn of Court .
Klinkner took part with UND President Andy Armacost and others in a UND bus tour across North Dakota .
During my interview process , the deal was sealed when then-dean Mike McGinniss invited me to visit the law school . I fell in love with the campus , my new colleagues , and the city of Grand Forks . I have lived in big , small , and international cities , and I really appreciate smaller communities . Grand Forks has great restaurants – Himalayan , Indian , American bistros . My wife , Lucia , and daughter , Ekaterina , frequently go to the public library . We also love the easy access to nature and visiting Turtle River State Park – one of the first things we did was get an annual state park pass ! In the summer , we enjoy fishing , camping , and the splash pad at University Park . I grew up in Wisconsin , so I am used to the cold and love winter sports . In high school , I enjoyed curling and am now on a curling team in Grand Forks . I live close enough that I can walk to the Ralph Englestad Arena and have already attended numerous hockey and basketball games . This is a very livable city and state , and we look forward to getting to know North Dakota even better .
Julia Ernst is the associate dean for Teaching and Engagement and professor at UND School of Law ( julia . ernst @ law . und . edu ). The interview has been edited for clarity and brevity .

Klinkner , Dean Brian Pappas , Professor Nick Datzov , and Professor Dan Lewerenz at the Association of American Law Schools meeting in San Diego .
I look forward to meeting more members of the bar , going to SBAND annual meetings , and serving as a resource to attorneys across North Dakota . I encourage readers to reach out to me if they would like me to speak or have questions I could help answer , as I want to be integrated into the legal community here . I would love to give CLEs to local bar associations and Inns of Court throughout the state .
I also love how warm and welcoming the UND campus is – I have found wonderful friends and mentors throughout the university .
