The Custom Jewellery Journey: From Stones to Stunning Creations

Who Supplies the Stones?

While some couples prefer to source their own diamonds and gemstones or bring heirloom pieces for remodelling, most are happy to leave the stone selection to the experts. A reputable jeweller will have access to the most stunning, ethically sourced diamonds and coloured gemstones available. Importantly, they will also have a deep understanding of market value when purchasing these precious stones.

What Happens Next?

After carefully noting your measurements and specifications, the design typically moves to the manufacturing team. At Brisbane’s Clayfield Jewellery, the process involves cutting-edge technology, using CAD (computer-aided design) and 3D printing. Once initial design discussions are complete at their North Brisbane showroom, the fun begins.

"Once we’re clear and happy on the design concept, our CAD designer will build it in the computer and print a 3D wax model for you to try on," explains Macy. "We make adjustments if necessary and then send it off for casting, or hand-make it in our onsite workshop using the 3D model as a prototype. Our jewellers work their magic, and the result is a beautiful piece!"

Can I See the Work in Progress?

One key advantage of choosing a jeweller with an onsite workshop is that you can see the magic happening firsthand.

"We always let our clients know they’re welcome to see the piece step by step as their vision comes to life," says Ben from Just B Jewellery. "However, more often than not, clients are content to join us back at Just B to see the completed piece."

Does a Custom Ring Cost More?

The short answer: not necessarily. Many factors affect the price and timeframe, including your choice of stones, metals, and the complexity of the design. An extravagant ready-made ring could be more expensive than a modest custom ring. Customizing an existing design can also help keep costs manageable. On the other hand, a highly intricate, luxurious one-off design may come at a premium—but the results will be premium too.

What Else Can I Customise?

If your engagement ring is already in place (and you can't take your eyes off it), there are still plenty of ways to add a bespoke touch to your bridal jewellery or accessories for the groom.

"At Just B, we specialize in creating anything humanly possible!" says Ben. "We can remodel heirloom jewellery, craft new creations from old rings, or create entirely new bespoke designs. It’s a wonderful way to bring loved ones and precious memories into your special day."
