UPCYCLING AND ANTIQUING

Repurposing items that you love — and giving them a new life — is at the heart of grandmillennial style . “ A visit to the consignment or thrift store is a great way to find and support local businesses while discovering vintage items ,” Kelly says . “ People are also finding items online on Facebook Marketplace , 1st Dibs and Chairish , and at yard sales and garage sales . You ’ re getting something new and fresh for your home — taking something your neighbors don ’ t cherish and turning it into something you do .”
To find treasures of your own , visit one of these local St . Simons Island antique stores :
• 1610 Antiques on Frederica ( 1610 Frederica Road ) – A fun , eclectic shop filled with great finds
• B & B Design and Consign ( 101 Demere Road ) – An upscale consignment shop offering furniture , art , home and garden finds .
• Oglethorpe Antiques ( 106 Redfern Village ) – Offers 18th and 19th Century English , French , and American antiques
• Low Country Walk Antiques ( 107 Low Country Lane ) – Founded in 1985 , this quaint business is family owned and operated .
GRANDMILLENNIAL STYLE FOCUSES ON AUTHENTICITY With grandmillennial style , “ We ’ re looking for the visual comfort of familiar things surrounding us ,” Kelly states . That could mean bringing out china , reframing artwork , turning an old piece of clothing into a pillow or repurposing an antique piece in a way that resonates with you .
“ Grandmillennial style is not decoration for decoration ’ s sake . It ’ s all meaningful . The items that are on display for this style are authentic . They are pieces that really speak to us ,” Kelly says . A little bit of imagination can help make grandmillennial style work , since you might want to rethink how you choose to use and display vintage items . “ The thought process is being a little bit more creative — tapping into your style and what is meaningful to you ,” she encourages .
Grandmillennial style can provide a sense of place and history . In many European countries , the architecture — central squares , opulent public buildings and traditional homes — creates a sense of place .
Kelly thinks grandmillennial style has the potential to be timeless . “ With it , everything has its place , and items celebrate who we are . That gives this trend a bit of staying power ,” she proclaims .
You might also discover items inside your four walls . “ Often , your own home may have a few furniture pieces stored in the attic or tucked away in the basement ,” Kelly suggests . A little creative thinking can give these pieces new life :
• An old dining cabinet can be repainted and repurposed as a library or bar
• An unused lamp can be refreshed with a new scalloped shade
• Hand-me-down chairs or cushions can be reupholstered in your favorite floral fabrics to support your new look .
