Remember , grandmillennial style doesn ’ t need to commandeer your home from your floorboards to your rooftop . You might want to choose certain elements from it or put your own spin on it . “ Make it your own ,” Kelly says .
If you ’ re looking for a room to test out the grandmillennial style , choose one that has a simple paint color . “ This trend allows us to add a little more color to simpler rooms and elevates the happiness factor ,” Kelly asserts . “ Plus , it can please everyone in the family because there are youthful elements and very sophisticated elements . It really bridges a lot of different age groups and involves different styles coming together .”
HOW TO MAKE GRANDMILLENNIAL STYLE WORK FOR YOU With grandmillennial style , you want to incorporate a few curated pieces into your design . “ To achieve this look , think ‘ edited ’ versus ‘ cluttered and fussy ,’” Kelly describes . “ A well-edited design will keep this look from feeling dated .” Grandmillennial style incorporates classic pieces in ways that are simple , clean and easy to maintain . It combines traditional elements in a casual , inviting look . It is a few well-chosen pieces , possibly updated heirloom pieces , that are being celebrated .
“ Designers are pulling off this aesthetic via layers — adding in an office chair made of cane , celebrating a vintage ginger jar on the mantle or as a dining room centerpiece , enjoying grandma ’ s china and silver on the kitchen table , installing floral wallpaper in the powder room or simply adding fringe and tassels to their client ’ s current chintz window coverings ,” Kelly explains .
It ’ s the blend of past and present that gives this style pizzazz . “ Mixing the things you truly love with rich , distressed leathers and colors that blend with your chosen florals can keep the grandmillennial aesthetic fresh ,” Kelly notes . She recommends mixing patterns and scales to combine old and new styles while creating a modern look .
“ I love a vintage wallpaper with a contemporary piece of art layered on top of it — that real , unexpected tension . The same can happen with lighting , with a dining room fixture that is a bit more modern placed in a room with botanical wallpaper — it creates interest and conversation ,” she says .
