Minimalist design has had its day . Today ’ s trending interior designs blend traditional and transitional elements in a look referred to as grandmillennial style . “ It brings together the fresh and the familiar ,” describes Kerrie Kelly , CEO and creative director of Kerrie Kelly Design Lab in Sacramento , California , and a member of the executive committee of the board of the American Society of Interior Designers .
The term “ grandmillennial ” stems from a House Beautiful article and people of all ages are embracing the style . It appeals to anyone who appreciates authenticity and personal style , and its emphasis on high-quality , classic pieces makes it a natural fit for vintage and consignment connoisseurs .
Grandmillennial style incorporates timeless design elements such as wicker , chintz , floral prints , chinois , ginger jars , botanical prints , patterned upholstery , heritage wood furniture and elegant wallpaper in a “ less is more ” aesthetic . It also connects interiors to nature , relaxation and well-being .
FIND YOUR INNER GRANDMILLENNIAL “ It ’ s important to give ourselves permission with interior design . Whatever style you ' re trying to embrace , there aren ' t really rules anymore ,” Kelly says . She recommends sitting with your space for a little while to get a feel for the colors , textures and designs that you want surrounding you and your family . “ Take the time to see how your home can really support your lifestyle ,” she suggests .
Seek out photos of designs , textures , colors and elements that inspire you — sites like Pinterest or old-school scrapbooks can be great for gathering and organizing your ideas . Once you start to see a direction emerging for your room or space , balance elements to create interest and juxtaposition . “ Try mixing leather with embroidered linen pillows , or a structured pinstripe paired with damask or chintz ,” Kelly proposes .
