The shrimp cocktail dates to the late 19th and early 20th centuries . One story credits a San Francisco gold prospector who ordered a whiskey and oysters , then dropped the oysters in the empty glass , threw on some vinegar , Worcestershire sauce , Tabasco , ketchup and horseradish and called it “ oyster cocktail .”
