A Focus on Wellness Benefits SBAND Members The mind, body, and soul all need to be in harmony to be the most effective in achieving overall wellness. A number of SBAND members are avid in their body wellness routines and reap the benefits of this dedication in their personal and professional lives. Below a few SBAND members share the benefits of their own wellness routines: day, no longer craving a nap at 2 p.m. I enjoy going to the office and am working on new ways to cultivate clients and expand my practice. Things that were a bother to me before now slip by without a care, and I am clear in my focus and my execution. Too often lawyers lose sight of themselves and their wellness, but the billable hour is not the end-all-be-all of our existence. If we don't take time to keep ourselves in shape physically, mentally, and emotionally, we cannot effectively represent our clients and provide the sound advice and representation they seek. Wellness should be at the foreground for every attorney. My only regret is that I didn't realize earlier you can still enjoy and indulge in life, but be in shape physically, mentally, and emotionally. ZUGER [email protected] [email protected] Justice Jerod Tufte started running in 2008, when he began his service in the North Dakota Army National Guard. He ran his first marathon in Kosovo shortly before his return from deployment in 2009, and has since run thirty standard marathons and fifteen races of distances longer than a marathon. Justice Tufte states that running is “my chance to turn my mind away from work for a while and recharge my attention and energy.” Jennifer Albaugh is a Fargo attorney and board of governors member, but also a busy mother of young children. She began her wellness journey in 2013, when her husband suffered a heart attack at just 32 years old. This resulted in a dietary shift for the both of them. For the past year, she has also been focusing on working out with Solidcore and using a Peleton bike. She says she is more organized, focused, and patient. She also notes, on the days she misses a workout, she finds herself thinking about the missed workout throughout the day and is upset she overslept or just simply didn’t make time to focus on herself for an hour. Over the past year, she says she has created more than a habit. Her wellness routine is now a lifestyle, which makes her a better person. “You have to make time to work out, and if it is important to you, then you’ll find time,” Albaugh says. “Balance is hard, but once you find your own 'balance,’ the reward is definitely worth the sacrifices.” Judge James Hill has been running most of his legal life. Initially, it was a way to condition and control weight. He has run seven marathons and too many other shorter distances to count. “Running became my stress reliever, mind adjusting time, and problem-solving interval,” he says. Judge Hill says running also helped him to put his personal and professional difficulties into perspective. “Your mind works in strange ways. I have always found that the problems I thought I had always became more manageable following a run,” he notes. “That remains true today. My family and my law partners were always better for it.
