GET TO KNOW YOUR BOARD MEMBER Peter Welte SBAND Board Member What is your current position? I’m an attorney and shareholder with the Vogel Law Firm. bills in the winter months. So, after getting married, my wife Lisa and I decided it was time to go back to law school. What is your hometown, college attended, and law school attended? I grew up on a farm west of Northwood, N.D. I graduated from Northwood High School. My undergraduate degree is from North Dakota State University (NDSU). I graduated from law school at the University of North Dakota. How long have you been on the SBAND board? I began serving on the SBAND board in 2015. What professional work did you do before law school? After graduation from NDSU, I worked for the USDA as a professional statistician for the National Agricultural Statistics Service in Concord, N.H. I also worked as the development coordinator for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. What led you to a career in law? I wanted to be a lawyer since elementary school. As a farmer, I needed a job that would pay the MEDIATION BY RETIRED JUDGES Resolve cases by mediation more effectively and efficiently than through litigation and trial. 30 THE GAVEL What other involvement have you had with SBAND prior to being on the board? I’ve served on the CLE committee since 2008. I also have served on the Annual Meeting Planning Committee a couple of times. In 2015, I was on the Judicial Nominating Committee for the NECJD. What is your favorite quote? There are too many to single out just one. Recently a dear attorney friend shared one from Abraham Lincoln: “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power. What is the last book you read (good or bad)? “Scalia’s Court: A Legacy of Landmark Opinions and Dissents.” It’s a great read. Karen K.
